Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Rippon made show history during the latest instalment of the BBC competition.

Strictly returned for week six of the series on Saturday night (October 28), with the contestants dressed to impressed for the Halloween special. Angela, 79, and Kai Widdrington performed the Charleston to the theme of Murder She Wrote and thoroughly impressed the judges as Craig Revel Horwood branded the routine a "swivel masterclass".

After the duo headed back up to the studio to chat with Claudia Winkleman following their routine, they were met with scores from the judges. Craig, 58, awarded Angela with a 9 while all three other judges gave her an eight, bringing her total to 33 out of 40.

Angela was lost for words as Claudia, 51, revealed she made BBC history with her performance. The presenter said: "Craig scored higher than the other judges. I don't think he's ever done that."

She added: "Or he did it once eight years ago." The former Come Dancing host could barely get her words out as she simply responded: "Gosh, thank you Craig!"

Angela has come under fire in recent weeks as fans accused show bosses of handing her the easiest dances. But the newsreader wasted no time clapping back at critics.

On Thursday's edition (October 26) of Good Morning Britain, Angela hit back at viewers who claimed she has only been doing slow dances. She said: "Well, we did the Quickstep, there's a clue in the title, and we did the very first dance which was the Cha Cha Cha."

Kai added: "We have something fast [this weekend], it's going to be fun and we're going to go for a bit of comedy as well. Make no mistake, Angela is doing lots of steps to a fast Charleston and she's being very much lifted over my head more than once with another trick in there!"

Angela, who is the oldest contestant to ever take part on Strictly, chipped in: "Also, of course, dance isn't all just about being fast and running around a ballroom, it's about technique, it's about precision, and that's what we've done I think in the last two particularly. The star went on: "While it may not look as if it's very exhausting, to actually get that physical muscular precision when you're doing things like the Rumba, the Argentine Tango, requires a heck of a lot of energy in a different way!"

Angela explained that she wished she'd made it onto the Strictly dance floor sooner than now, but confirmed this was the first year she had been asked by BBC bosses. The TV icon told the presenters: "I would have loved to have done this years ago when I was younger and fitter but this is the first year they asked me!"
