A New Study Busted A Major Myth About Women’s Heart Attacks

There is a large and fatal gender gap in cardiovascular treatment across the United States. Women are three times more likely to die than men after a serious heart attack, according to a 2018 Journal of the American Heart Association study. Researchers have thought that this disparity was due to women experiencing different heart attack symptoms than men, and not being able to seek treatment quickly enough. But a new study says that that’s a myth, and women do not have different heart attack symptoms than men.

The new study, also published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that the incorrect assumption that women’s heart attack symptoms are different than men’s can lead to delayed treatment and increased mortality in women. To disprove the myth of gender-based heart attack symptoms, the study bypassed symptomatic observations altogether. Typically, the study said, symptoms are recorded after a doctor confirms a heart attack diagnosis, which introduces confirmation bias to the process.

In the study, however, heart attacks were confirmed with blood tests, and the symptoms for each patient were recorded by an independent research nurse who was unaware of the diagnoses. By eliminating confirmation bias from the process of recording symptoms, the study revealed that the most typical symptoms of a heart attack (chest pain and left arm pain) were reported at almost identical rates by women and men.

These findings are extremely significant for the future of treating people of all genders for heart attacks. The gender disparity in heart attack fatalities results from fundamental sexism in the training of male physicians, according to a 2018 study published in the journal for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS).

The PNAS study found that women were more likely to die after being treated by male doctors for heart attack-related care. The patients of women doctors, regardless of gender, were more likely to live than the patients of male doctors. And further, the study found that the mortality rates of male doctors’ patients decreased when they practiced with more women colleagues, strongly suggesting that sexism in medical training biases male doctors in ways that cost women their lives. This may well be connected to the results of a 2015 study published in the journal Circulation, which found that women seeking medical help are often not believed by male doctors when they describe their symptoms.

And while the study didn’t explicitly account for non-binary and transgender patients, a 2018 study published in the journal Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders found that cardiovascular disease is more fatal for trans people than their cisgender peers.

Unfortunately, this finding is unsurprising, given that primary care physicians often lack the training required to accurately screen for diseases (including cardiac diseases) and provide preventative care for trans and non-binary people, according to a 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

So where does this leave people with marginalized genders who are concerned about their heart health? Seeking second opinions when possible and not letting your medical concerns be dismissed as anxiety or overreaction is a start, but so is a fundamental restructuring of medical education and institutional processes. A 2017 study published by the JAMA Network found that women doctors consistently have better patient outcomes than male doctors, so shifting the gears of the medical industry to learn from these women doctors is important. So if you’re concerned about your cardiac health, it might be a good idea to seek treatment as soon as you can, to prevent the possibility of a cardiac emergency.

Miley Cyrus Is 'Disappointed' Liam Hemsworth Filed for Divorce But Is 'Doing Well': Source

It seems this is the end for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth.

The pop star, 26, is looking to the future now that the actor, 29, has filed for divorce.

“She didn’t expect it and is a bit disappointed, but she is still doing well and has obviously moved on as well,” a Cyrus insider tells PEOPLE of the singer.

According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, Hemsworth filed for divorce from Cyrus on Wednesday in Los Angeles, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The pair signed a prenuptial agreement ahead of their marriage, so a smooth divorce is expected, PEOPLE confirms.

Despite the breakup, the insider says Cyrus has fond memories of their nearly 10-year romance.

“What she and Liam had for a long time was very special,” the Cyrus insider adds. “It’s just hard for her to think that she will never have this again with Liam. There are really so many things that she loves about him.”

Liam Hemsworth & Miley Cyrus

Cyrus and Hemsworth met when they were teenagers on the set of The Last Song in 2009. They dated on and off for almost a decade before they tied the knot on Dec. 23, 2018, in an intimate ceremony at her family’s home in Franklin, Tennessee.

On Aug. 10, a rep for Cyrus confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement that the couple had separated, after seven months of marriage.

“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” the statement read. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

However, a source told PEOPLE the two had already been apart for months.

Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

Days after Cyrus’s announcement, Hemsworth broke his silence on Instagram, writing: “Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward.”

The same day Cyrus confirmed her separation, she was seen kissing longtime friend Kaitlynn Carter, 30, in Italy; Carter herself recently split from husband Brody Jenner. Since returning from Italy, Cyrus has continued to spend time with new flame Carter, while Hemsworth remains in Australia with his family.

On Friday, Cyrus seemed to allude to their crumbling relationship when she released her new heartbreak track “Slide Away,” which features the scorching lyrics: “I want my house in the hills / Don’t want the whiskey and pills / I don’t give up easily / But I don’t think I’m down.”

“She isn’t trying to hurt him, but she wants to share what she’s been going through,” says the insider. “She’s channeling her emotions into her work and leaning on her family and friends.”

Kit Harington Reveals What Happened to Jon Snow After the Game of Thrones Series Finale

We now know something about Jon Snow.

During Game of Thrones‘ (controversial) finale in May, Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, was sent back to the Night’s Watch after murdering his aunt/lover turned Mad Queen, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

In the finale’s closing scene, Jon headed off with his men from Castle Black for beyond The Wall. But where was he headed, and what would he do?

Well, the common theory for savvy GOT fans proved to be the correct one, as Harington, 32, confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last week that Jon Snow did, in fact, head beyond the Wall to be with his allies, the Wildlings.

“Seeing him go beyond the Wall back to something true, something honest, something pure with these people he was always told he belongs with — the Free Folk — it felt to me like he was finally free,” Harington told the magazine.

Kit Harington as Jon Snow

“Instead of being chained and sent to the Wall, it felt like he was set free,” the actor added. “It was a really sweet ending. As much as he had done a horrible thing [in killing Daenerys], as much as he had felt that pain, the actual ending for him was finally being released.”

Jon Snow had a long history with the Wildlings throughout the HBO series, most notably with Ygritte, played by his real-life wife Rose Leslie. The two began as rivals, became lovers, and ultimately ended as enemies once again when Jon killed her.

By the end of the series, Jon brought in the Wildlings as close allies, and he even formed a tight friendship with Tormund, who joined Jon in the finale for his exile.

After the popular series wrapped in May, Harington — who is currently nominated for an Emmy for best actor in a drama series award – entered a wellness facility in Connecticut to “work on some personal issues.”

Kit Harington

Harington’s rep confirmed to PEOPLE on May 28 that ahead of the series finale of Game of Thrones, the actor decided to “utilize this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues.”

A source previously PEOPLE that Harington struggled with his status as an A-list star after shooting to fame on the HBO series.

Rose Leslie and Kit Harington

“For 10 years, Kit was almost interchangeable with Jon Snow, and fully inhabited this intense character,” the source said. “The role and especially the level of fame he was thrust into was a lot for someone so young and just out of drama school.”

In June, the actor was spotted back in London.  A source confirmed to PEOPLE that Harington was doing better after leaving treatment and spending time with his wife.

“The two are enjoying the summer, spending time with family and friends. Kit seems well. And Rose seems happy that he is back in London,” the source shared. “While he was in Connecticut, she was laying low. It seemed their focus was just getting Kit feeling better. And he does look better. Kit and Rose seem happy.”

Harington himself has been open about how heavily the last decade has weighed on him.

“It was formative years for everyone,” he previously told PEOPLE. “I started at 22 and ended at 32 and those are amazing formative years. If you’re Peter Dinklage, you started at 35. It defines that decade of your life, and that will probably the most bizarre decade of your life.”

Fashion student accuses Levi’s of ripping off her ideas

Fashion student accuses Levi’s of ripping off her ideas after the denim giant used a VERY similar design to one she submitted for a competition

  • Caitlin Fraser from Govanhill, Glasgow, hit out at fashion brand Levi’s on Twitter
  • Claims the denim giant used her designs, which she had sent in for competition
  • Was shortlisted and claims Levi’s used designs knowingly without permission
  • Designs both show quotes highlighted by bleach on jackets and pairs of jeans

A fashion student has hit out at £5.1bn denim brand Levi’s for allegedly ripping off her designs.

Caitlin Fraser from Govanhill, Glasgow, shared images that show a remarkable similarity between her creations and Levi’s’ recent Handmaid’s Tale-themed products.

The third year fashion and design student from The Glasgow School of Art claims the brand ‘stole’ ideas from her, after she entered and was shortlisted for one of its competitions.

Pictures show Caitlin’s work, which features the words of conceptual artist Jenny Holzer bleached onto distressed denim, compared alongside a Levi’s jacket that has quotes from The Handmaid’s Tale printed on to it.

MailOnline has reached out to Levi’s for comment.

A fashion student from Glasgow hit out at denim giant Levi’s, claiming they stole her designs for their joint Handmaid’s Tale campaign with Hulu

Caitlin (pictured) claims that Levi’s saw her designs (right) as the brand shortlisted them for their Levi’s X Arts Thread 2019 competition

The Levi’s design, which consists of quotes from the Handmaid’s Tale highlighted in bleach on a denim jacket

Caitlin took to Twitter to vent her frustrations, sharing images of her work alongside Levi’s latest range.

She captioned it: ‘Find it weird that this @LEVIS design is very similar to the stuff I sent to Levi’s for a competition a few months ago which I was shortlisted for therefore they have looked at my work.

‘They’ve also captioned it “join the resistance” which my whole project was based on…’.

Social media users reacted with outrage to the Tweet, which has clocked up over 2,000 likes.

People on Twitter were outraged by the student’s claims and asked the denim giant for explanations

Bracken Buchan replied: ‘I would be so livid if that happened to me! It’s actually shocking how many up and coming designers have the same stories about big companies ripping off of them!

‘Deffo get a lawyer if it’s not been put in the small print and even then surely you should get a cut of the proceeds,’ they added.

Kelly Sloan retweeted Caitlin’s photos with the caption: ‘Absolute snakes. Why do big brands LUUUUV to steal ideas from designers and give them no credit for it, like they’ve actually just stolen a whole idea (sic)!

A screenshot provided by Caitlin which shows her designs were shortlisted as part of the Levi’s competition

An email from Levi’s to Caitlin informing her that while she hadn’t won the overall competition, she was shortlisted as one of the top 20 entrants

Some of the designs that Caitlin submitted to Levi’s for the Rule Breakers vs Rule Makers competition

‘They’re an actual billion dollar company the least they could do was give Caitlin a bit of recognition. Embarrassing.’

‘Wtf, in one way this is great cos it just shows how cool your ideas are, but on the other hand how f****** annoying!! I smell a lawsuit (sic),’ another wrote.

While Mathew Cleland said: ‘@LEVI’S explain yersels (sic)!!’

Replying to the comments Caitlin added: ‘They had the absolute cheek to tell me I hadn’t won their competition but then stole ideas off me.’

Caitlin had been shortlisted in the top 20 of the Levi’s X Arts Thread 2019 competition for her concept entitled: ‘Rule Breakers vs Rule Makers.’

Levi’s tweeted the image to advertise their new line of patches inspired by TV drama The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Attwood’s 1985 novel about life in a dystopian United States.

Sam Smith opens up about mental health, therapy in Instagram post

Sam Smith has spoken very candidly about mental health and therapy before, and on Tuesday, he wanted to remind his fans they “are enough.”

The 27-year-old singer took to Instagram to share a post about this past year and how it’s been the “most challenging time” of his life.

“Just wanted to share a little thought with you all. Sitting here on my first holiday in a long long [sic] time. Looking back on a year and a half of therapy and what has been probably the most challenging time of my short 27 years here,” Smith began his post.

“I’ve watched and read so much over the last 6 months to try and make sense of all the mess in my head,” the Dancing With a Stranger singer wrote. “Tried to find ways to organize all of my problems so that they are bound and organized into folders and boxes, so that they will never haunt me or effect [sic] me again.”

The Grammy winner mentioned words from author Brene Brown: “I am enough.”

Smith said he is “slowly starting to realize that the words above are the only words that really matter.”

“And they are the words of the incredible @BreneBrown…. ‘You are enough’ That mess in your mind is not a mess. It is who you are.”

The How Do You Sleep singer continued: “By constantly trying to change and seek perfection and a life of no pain only causes more pain I am realizing. Still on course and learning but feeling the closest I’ve ever felt to a real space of joy, gratitude and peace.”

Smith said he hopes he can help his fans.

“Sorry to blab on,” Smith wrote. “But I know we are all dealing with some really heavy s–t at times. And I find listening to words from strangers comforting. So hopefully sometimes I can be that stranger to you guys.”

He ended his post with some advice for others to take with them.

“Now every morning and every night before you go to bed. Say these words to yourself in the mirror. I’m gonna do it too. We are in this together. Hope you’re all having a gorgeous summer x,” Smith concluded his post.

In February, Smith revealed that he gets “depressed” on tour.

He was hit hard by the pain of his breakup with 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn last June, after eight months of dating, and admitted he feels his lowest when he’s on the road.

He said: “Being on tour is a bit of a crazy experience. I get really low sometimes on tour.

“I feel like I sound so depressing all the time when I talk about it, but I get depressed on tour.

“I think it’s the responsibly and pressure that makes me struggle.”

The Promises singer also confessed that he can’t bear to see couples being romantic and gushy with one another when he’s single and admitted that he gets jealous of other people’s relationships.

Speaking on Will Young’s Homo Sapiens podcast, he said: “I’ve just gone through a breakup so I’m not in the mood for romance.

“When I see couples, I just want to poke their eyes.

“It’s hard to be happy for other people when you feel so s–t.”

Despite struggling with the end of their relationship, Smith still thinks the world of his ex-boyfriend.

He said previously: “Brandon was wonderful.”

“I’m still trying to figure out what I took from that relationship and what it meant to me. It’s still quite raw. All my relationships have ended in a nice way, never nasty.”
