It looks as though ITV’s new series Payback has split viewers’ opinions as the first episode kicked off on Wednesday night.
The six-part show explores the dark world of economic crime as one woman is on a mission to get answers about her husband’s sudden death.
During the episode, fans saw Lexie Noble’s (played by Morven Christie) life plunged into chaos when her accountant husband Jared was brutally murdered in a street attack.
As the duo had set up their own firm, with Lexie taking a step back when their daughter was born, Jared decided to take on dangerous new clients, including crime boss Cal Morris (Peter Mullan).
With Jared’s death throwing her family’s life upside down, Lexie is forced to face some unthinkable truths as she learns what her husband was up to, including a potential affair.

However, it seemed as though viewers were split with their thoughts over the episode as some admitted it was a “struggle” to watch.
Taking to Twitter, @craftymiss said: “Who’s watching ITV’s #Payback it’s rather dull.”
Agreeing, @atvfriend commented: “I’m struggling a bit with this… Maybe it’s me.“
@Pearlsgirl73 added: “Bit predictable this is #Payback.”

Although it seemed as though not everyone shared the same opinion as there were some viewers who praised the new series.
@blue_laur11 tweeted: “Oh this #Payback is good the plot is getting more thicker now what was Jared mixed up in!”
@cannylad23 said: “Good drama for a change. They should have put CCTV in her house.”
Viewer @Olivia270291 added: “The plot thickens…Incredible so far.”
A synopsis for the next episode reveals there’s a shocking discovery that puts Lexie’s family in danger.
It reads: “Feeling increasingly isolated and deceived, Lexie is left with no choice but to agree to help crime boss Cal Morris with a secret business transaction.
“Later, a shock discovery then threatens the safety of Lexie’s family and she’s forced further into the criminal underbelly of Cal’s empire.”
Payback continues next Wednesday on ITV from 9pm.
