Jay Blades has detailed one moment where a parent couldn’t stop crying after he helped her daughter.

During a question and answer session on The Repair Shop’s official Instagram, the 53-year-old opened up on one special moment he encountered.

When asked which of his accomplishments was he most proud of, the BBC presenter recalled a memory from his community work helping young people.

After highlighting that his children give him the most pride, he added: “With regards to the work that I do, I love doing community work.

“There’s a young girl called Variety who I worked with who hadn’t smiled for about three to four years.

“Her mum brought her to the workshop and we were working with her for about four weeks, then her mum came in and she was crying.”

Recalling what had happened, Jay shared that he took Variety’s mum aside to ask her what was wrong.

Detailing their conversation, it transpired the young girl was smiling at her mum when speaking about what she’d been doing with Jay in the workshop.

The mum told the repair expert, “I’ve not stopped crying Jay, you have been able to support her and get her to open up in an environment where it just worked”.

“So, craft for me being able to get a young girl to smile, now that to me is my greatest achievement.

“I could curl up and not do anymore and just remember Variety’s mum because that was ultra special.”

The Repair Shop expert has been helping thousands of disadvantaged young people throughout the years and is passionate about supporting charitable causes close to his heart.

Jay previously set up the charity Out of the Dark which helped youths by training them to restore old furniture.

After 15 years of running the charity, it sadly lost its funding, which resulted in the organisation being forced to close in 2015.

However, he’s continued to be part of important causes and is an ambassador for places such as Tiny Toes, Tiny Feet and Gangs Unite.

On his website, it reads: “Jay is an inspirational mentor and has the ability to encourage individuals to think differently and realise their full potential.”

The Repair Shop is available on BBC iPlayer.
