ITV Emmerdales Charity Dingles history – from first appearance to romances

Emmerdale: Charity Dingle says Noah is just like his father

Charity Dingle is played by Emma Atkins who made her Emmerdale debut in 2000 as part of a hard-hitting family storyline. The character soon became a fan-favourite and is perhaps best known for being in an array of relationships over the decades with both men and women.

Charity has been in a number of failed marriages, but the character has never given up on romance despite having so much heartbreak in her life.

She arrived in the Yorkshire Dales for her cousin’s funeral alongside village hard man Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley). Before long, she began a relationship with millionaire businessman Chris Tate (Peter Amory) while embarking on an affair with his sister Zoe Tate (Leah Bracknell).

She tied the knot the Chris, but later discovered Paddy Kirk’s (Dominic Brunt) foster child Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) was her daughter who was conceived from a one-night stand with Cain when she was only 13.

Charity later got romantically involved with Cain again, but it was not long before her husband Chris found out. He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and poisoned himself to frame Charity for his death.

While she was in police custody, Charity gave birth to Chris’ son Noah Dingle (Jack Downham) and once she was released without charge, she started a relationship with Tom King (Kenneth Farrington).

That all ended when Tom was made to believe Charity was cheating on him with Cain.

Later down the line, Charity got engaged to Michael Conway (Jamie Belman), but he was having an affair with her daughter, Debbie. Once they broke up, Charity got a job working for Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson).

They got romantically involved with each other and soon got married. However, it all ended in tears when she found out he was having an affair and had fathered a son.

Charity was not ready to give up on love and eventually married Declan Macey (xx) which ended in horror as he tried to kill her for having an abortion.

She was sent to prison and upon her release she tried to rekindle her romance with Cain who was with Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb) at this stage.

Before long, Charity fell for Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) who became her rock during a traumatic rape trial after Charity told her she was raped as a teenager by police officer Mark Bails (Rocky Marshall). Charity’s son Ryan Stocks (James Moore) is Mark’s son.

After Vanessa’s surgery for cancer, Charity decided she wanted to propose. She rejected the first proposal but said yes the second time.

However, family matters became complicated and Charity later cheated on the love of her life with Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb).

The pair were planning their wedding following an awful miscarriage, but Charity had no idea he had slept with Chloe Harris (Jessie Elland) and was going to be her baby’s father.

Charity and Mack broke up not long after their wedding day when the truth about him and Chloe was revealed. He tried to make things work with Chloe romantically, but recently reunited with Charity which infuriated Chloe who has run away with their baby son Reuben.

Will Charity and Mack be able to make their relationship work this time around – or will it be easier for both if they remain single for the foreseeable?
