A woman 'obsessed with death' has sparked backlash after she bought a stranger’s ashes on Facebook Marketplace.
When most people are grieving the loss of a loved one who has been cremated, deciding what to do with the ashes can be a chance to say goodbye and find some closure. Some scatter them. Some keep them at home in an urn.
But some do the unthinkable and sell the ashes for a bit of extra cash. This is exactly what one bloke decided to do after his mum passed away as he created a listing on Facebook Marketplace, selling 2oz vials of her ashes for $30 each with an extra $5 for backstory.

Many may be thinking – who would buy that? Well, one TikTok user who works as a mortician was keen to do so and even paid the extra charge to hear the backstory.
Lauren Eliza, who posts videos about "death and dying" under the username @lovee.miss.lauren, originally shared a clip of herself responding to another creator who had discovered the bizarre listing on Facebook. She said: "Where’s the listing? Send me the listing. I want to buy and I want to pay the extra $5 for the back drama story too. Who sells their mama’s ashes on Facebook Marketplace?"
The death expert added that she was “pretty sure” it’s legal to do – and she was right. There is no federal law in the US against selling human remains, Law.com states.
In a follow-up clip, Lauren revealed that she had purchased the ashes as she did an "unboxing" for her fans. Inside the package was a small glass jar of human remains and an envelope containing the backstory, which she did not reveal.
When someone questioned if it was real in the comments, Lauren confirmed: "It’s real. You can see me in real time confirm… because I see the [bone] fragments."
However, some Reddit users seemed to question whether the purchase was "unethical" and crossed "professional boundaries". One user wrote: "Okay, this is f****d up. I used to work in the funeral industry and this is so unethical, and she knows that. The only way this would be appropriate is if she bought them so no one else could and gave them an appropriate resting place.”
Meanwhile, another said: "This is sickening and disrespectful as f**k." A third added: "This is so wrong…"

However, others were invested in the story and begged to hear the reason for the sale. One user said: "Can I buy just the back story. My husband said no to random person ash in the house."
Another added: "Did she tell you the story? I need to know lol." A third commented: "Spill the tea!! But not the ashes."
The seller of the ashes even made a Facebook page for those who purchased from him called, ‘I Know It Might Be Wrong But I Bought Some Of Chris’s Mom ‘. However, it is unknown whether or not Lauren is a part of the group.
