Bread and butter with a cup of tea is a common British breakfast staple – whether you’re enjoying the meal before jumping on the school bus or wolfing it down before rushing to work.
And a body language expert says that little details – like how dark your toast is, or where you begin spreading your condiment – may serve as surprising markers about your personality.
Communication coach Judi James, from London, told Bertinet Bakery what it means if you enjoy the taste or burnt, charred toast – and which butter application method is the ‘sexiest’.
The sourdough maker also surveyed 2,000 Britons to see what the most popular combo is, revealing that 30% enjoy ‘medium well done (mid brown)’ bread.

Here, FEMAIL rounded up the pro’s verdict on who ‘keeps calm under pressure’ – and who will be ‘leaving a trail of heartbroken exes in their wake’.
THE BREAD
Burnt (black): THE DARK DESTROYER
‘You’re part of the 1% who like it burnt black, showing a desire to control things in life, fearlessly speak your mind and jump into situations others avoid,’ Judi says.
‘You’re spontaneously sexy but tend to burn bright before burnout, meaning you could leave a trail of heartbroken exes in your wake.’
Well done (dark brown): THE IMMERSIVE EATER
Judi says that those that like their toast dark brown are ‘decisive and take time to enjoy each decision you make, from food to relationships’.
‘If you do something, you do it well or not at all,’ she advised. ‘Open-minded and fair, you pride yourself on being calm under pressure.’
Medium well done (mid brown): THE PERFECTIONIST
The body language expert explained that people who leave their bread in until it becomes ‘mid brown’ are perfectionists. ‘You set standards and expect others to keep to them,’ she says.
‘You’re part of the majority, meaning you’re sociable and enjoy the fact that your decisions would be seen as sensible and “normal”. You can quietly lose it if confronted with alternatives though, and are most likely to complain if served toast in a café that has only been “shown to the flame”.’
Medium (golden brown): THE SENSUALIST
‘You tend to treat food as a full sensory experience,’ Judi reveals. ‘Heightening the eating pleasure by enjoying the golden colour as well as the delicious aroma.’
Very light (white but crisped): THE FOOD-FLIRT
Those who like their toast ‘white but crisped’ are classified as ‘food-flirts’, the pro says. ‘You’re picky and like to think you’re a little bit special,’ she added.
‘You also enjoy making the most of your treats, i.e. getting the full bread experience but with a crispy coating, adding an extra dimension.’
Extremely light (hot bread): THE SELF-COMFORTER
Judi says: ‘You enjoy using food as a mood enhancer because the aroma, sight and texture of hot bread almost defines the phrase “comfort eating”.
‘Warm and empathetic, you place high value on relationships and work hard to keep calm under pressure.’
So how do you make the perfect toast?
Dr. Cyan Williams, Expert Interdisciplinary Scientist says: ‘The prime toasted temperature is around 180ºC for medium toast and 500ºC for blackened toast.
‘Toasting food has been proven to taste better too. This is due to the Maillard reaction where amino acids in proteins and sugars start interacting, creating different flavours and aromas, similar to caramelisation.’

THE BUTTER
Always butter toast: THE SOCIAL NETWORKER
Judi says these are people who don’t think toast is toast ‘until you’ve introduced it to butter’.
‘Combination eating is important to you, as one enhances the pleasure of the other,’ she revealed.
‘You love other life-long relationships too, like marriage, because you know teamwork tends to be best.’
Never butter toast: THE HAWK
No butter? No fear, says Judi. The body language expert says that these people like to ‘focus and home in on one pleasure at a time, with the dry toast allowing an enjoyment of crunch and crumbs with nothing else diluting the experience’.
She added: ‘You’re the same in relationships, as well as the workplace: intense, focused and avoiding distractions until you’re finished.’
Don’t let toast cool before buttering: THE SEXY BEAST SATURATIONIST
Judi says this option is both the ‘messiest’ and the ‘sexist’ – ‘because you adore the way butter soaks through the bread and enjoy the way it gets all over your fingers and drips down your chin’.
‘Pleasure is a priority for you,’ she recounted.
‘And you probably love licking your buttery, crumby fingers once the toast is eaten.’
Let toast cool before buttering: THE PRACTICAL PLANNER
‘You’re sensible and adult about all things in life and always remember to do things like get butter out of the fridge first, so it’s soft enough to spread,’ Judi revealed.
‘You tend to be happy but not greedy or spontaneous. You always remember to pop a few slices in the toaster for your partner too.’
Butter bread when making a sandwich: THE TRADITIONALIST
Judi stressed how important it is for many people to use butter not just for good old fashion toast – but greater endeavours too, like sandwiches.
‘You know a sarnie isn’t a sarnie without a good lashing of butter as part of the filling,’ she said.
‘This is a massive percentage, meaning we’re a nation of good-hearted, loyal and cheerful types who know what we like and prefer to stick with it for no other reason than it’s really, really nice.’

Like a pool of butter in the middle of toast: THE SELF-INDULGENT
The body language expert explained: ‘You’ll just see something tempting, then eat it or enjoy it without worrying about guilt or any consequences.
‘That pool of butter has your name on it. You know you deserve the treat, even if you’re not sure why.’
Always butter toast to the edges: THE ARTIST
‘You’re like a builder cementing a brick,’ Judi remarked.
‘Getting it perfect is important. You’re confident and have solid self-esteem, which is why you spend extra time making food perfect.
‘This approach applied to relationships might put you under pressure sometimes, but you know extra work is always worth it.’
Never butter toast to the edges: THE CHAOTIC RISK-TAKER
The body language expert said this experimental habit shows a ‘haphazard approach’.
‘[It] means you’re throwing dry toast into the mix with a buttery, pleasurable option,’ she revealed.
‘Nibbling dry crusts to get to the buttery toast in the middle suggests you like treats but will take risks to get them.
‘In a relationship, this means risking a row to enjoy intense make-up sex afterwards.’
