Steph McGovern: Scary stalker told her parents they were in a relationship

TV presenter Steph McGovern has revealed she had a crazed stalker who even wrote letters to her parents.

The 41-year-old currently hosts Channel 4’s live daily show Steph’s Packed Lunch, which is being axed at the end of the year it was recently announced.

But it was during her time with the BBC, where she presented such shows as Watchdog and Breakfast, that she attracted the unwanted attention of a male admirer.

Steph says the issue came to a head when the man in question sent a letter to her parents falsely claiming he was in a relationship with her – prompting her to contact BBC security. She said: “I had a stalker when I was at the BBC. It was just some guy turning up everywhere I went.

“He ended up writing to my family saying he was in a relationship with me. It was really crazy but BBC security dealt with it. I think they told him to go away, there were no charges. Once he was told to stop he did.”

Steph was “creeped out” by the experience but said it is all part and parcel of being a household name.

The Middlesbrough-born star said: “It was frightening when it went to my parents as I did not know how he found out where they lived. Sadly, I think it comes with the job as that is part of the success of being on TV.

“You are looked up to as someone on telly and there can be somebody out there who just doesn’t like it and they take it too far. It is a scary old thing.”

Steph is now said to be “in the running” for Holly Willoughby’s This Morning job.
