Love Islands Sammy Root reveals dads stark warning after winning show

Love Island winner Sammy Root has revealed that his dad warned him about spending all the prize money.

The 22-year-old took home a whopping £50,000 with his ex-girlfriend Jess Harding, after they won season 10 of the ITV2 in the summer of 2023.

Sammy and Jess both returned from Spain the the UK with £25,000 each, as the couple decided to split the prize money equally.

The former project manager admitted that he quit his day job to appear on the show but has said that he may return to his career one day.

He has also confessed that he has been "sensible" with his prize money, after receiving a stark warning from his dad.

Speaking to The Mirror, Sammy revealed he has received his share of the prize and has spent it wisely.

He confessed: "I have been careful because I am a very sensible person with my money as it is. Growing up, my dad would not let me throw it away.

"So not much, I brought my mum a necklace when I got out and treated the family to a meal and stuff. Other than that, I have been keeping it safe."

While Sammy and Jess decided to share the prize money, in previous years, couples were given the chance to steal the money off their partner.

Traditionally, each member of the winning couple was given a golden envelope. One had £50,000 written inside and the other had £0.

The Islander who got the £50,000 envelope then had to decide whether they would share the money with their partner – or whether they would steal it all for themselves.

Every year, the winning couples have decided to split the cash evenly as they choose love over money.

The couple shocked fans when they announced their split just months after winning the show.

At the time, Sammy released a statement saying: "To be totally clear – I at least wanted a face to face conversation to see if our relationship could be saved and felt this would be a respectful way forward.

"We had the most incredible experience winning Love Island and I genuinely saw a future with Jess.

"I was committed and respectful to our relationship. Unfortunately things don't always work out the way you'd hoped."

Now Sammy is said to have set his sights on charity work and he has sine admitted that he wouldn't say no to another stint on TV.
