Many of us enjoy playing games at Christmas – and Monopoly has been a staple with British families for decades.

The multiplayer board game, which was first available 88 years ago, requires you to buy up as much property as possible. You can then build properties and hotels on the spaces to charge hefty fees to anyone who lands there.

You then collect rent from other players in a bid to bankrupt them, which is why things can get pretty heated. And a common argument people have is about the rules of the game.

Even though we've all been playing Monopoly for yonks, many still squabble about the function of 'Free Parking'. And be warned, arguments could be about to get a lot worse.

A post on Thrillist left us all thinking. After stumbling across a video, the writer found out that, well, Free Parking can be whatever we want it to be.

And do you know what, they're right. Sounds strange? Well not really – as they go on to explain.

"The Today I Found Out YouTube channel has attempted to clarify this and a few other Monopoly rules that are often ignored," the post began.

"The Free Parking space is just free parking. Nothing happens when you land there under the rules laid out in the rulebook.

"But like many commonly used Monopoly rules, most of which serve to make the game take longer, people play by their own rules. The most popular for Free Parking is to not return fines into the bank, but to a kitty that's won by the next person to land on Free Parking.

"Hasbro recognised this after commissioning a study on how people played the game and made a House Rules edition. It employs many of the rules people play with that run in contrast to the actual rulebook.

"For instance, many don't allow players to collect rent money while they're in jail. Traditional rules say you do collect money."

There you have it then, time for us to use the Free Parking rule to suit our own needs. Just use this story as evidence on the big day.
