BBC actor Suranne Jones has opened up about “accepting pain” in her family life. The star has also detailed how she previously “struggled” to balance her relationship with her hectic acting career, whilst discussing mum guilt.

Suranne, 45, has previously starred as Anne Lister in BBC One’s Gentleman Jack, landed a role in ITV’s drama series Maryland, whilst also appearing on Celebrity Gogglebox and Doctor Who. Later this month, the busy mum-of-one is due to reprise her role as Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva in the second series of Vigil.

Ahead of the show’s premiere on December 10, Suranne discussed parenting and her marriage to husband, Laurence Akers. Speaking to Big Issue in May, the actor said that after finishing Gentleman Jack, she was granted six months off.

“I was developing Maryland, and that is a long and frustrating process which needs total commitment,” she began. “But I know it will be worth it to say to my family, ‘I’m going to go off and do this, but then I’m going to take the whole summer off.’”

She went on to acknowledge that most working parents can’t just take six months off of work, and claimed that her busy schedule is an “acceptance of a lot of pain”. The actress – who gave birth to her first son in 2016 – also admitted that her brood isn’t like “most other families”.

“I can’t do what other mums are doing,” she revealed.

In the interview, Suranne also stated that there was a time when she really “struggled” to balance her career with family commitments.

“I had a good few years of thinking, I’m not a good enough mother. I’m not a good enough wife,” the Vigil actor explained.

“And I’m not really doing a very good job of acting because I’m worried about those other things.”

“I’m very fortunate to be able to say, ‘I’m not going to work for a bit because I have to just not work’, and I have to be at the school gate and go to my son’s terrible joke-telling session,” she added.

Elsewhere in the conversation, the former Coronation Street star revealed that she wishes she could tell her mum about her experiences after becoming a parent.
