A husband whose wife became the first woman in the UK to be convicted of coercive behaviour has found love again four years after trying to take his own life following years of abuse.

Lorry driver Tony Hannington was attacked with hammers, knives and tins of beans over a six year period by his violent ex Tracy.

In October 2019 she was jailed for two years for the campaign of coercive and violent behaviour towards Tony, 58, after he approached a domestic abuse charity who helped him build a case against his wife of six years.

After four years of feeling unable to trust another woman and slowly trying to rebuild his life and confidence, Tony from Herne Bay, Kent plucked up the courage to try online dating where he met his new partner court services worker Elaine Horne, 59, who he has been dating for 15 months.

Speaking for the first time about finding happiness again, Tony said: ‘Elaine has restored my faith in women and most importantly my ability to have found happiness after years of misery.

‘I will never forget the pain both mental and physical that Tracy put me through but with the support of Elaine and friends and family I am in a happy place at last.

‘Elaine is a wonderful woman and we are very much looking forward to the future together.’

Tony was left contemplating suicide when the abuse he suffered at the hands of Tracy, 60, came to a head four years ago when she lunged at Tony’s stomach with a knife at their home.

Tony recalled ‘giving up’ and took a mixture of alcohol and pills before passing out.

The pair first met on a dating website in 2012 but it wasn’t long before Tracy turned from a loving partner to an abusive one both verbal and physical.

Attacks included phone threats to stick a knife in him, punching him all over his body, digging her nails into his windpipe and smashing him over the head with a tin of beans.

On other occasions she held a knife to his throat, hurled hot cups of tea into his face and swung a hoover head into his face.

Tracy was convicted of ABH, controlling and coercive behaviour.

Despite being jailed for two years she served eight months behind bars and the rest of her sentence on licence.

She has also been banned from contacting or approaching Tony.

‘Both Elaine and I still have that worry that Tracy might approach me again but the police have been brilliant since her release.’

Tony said: ‘Elaine deserves to find happiness also since she lost her husband tragically from a brain tumour five years ago.

‘We have both learned to live each day at a time.

‘I hope other men who have found themselves in my position will read my story and realise seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of and you can find happiness again with another woman.’

Elaine laughed: ‘I like to think I’ve been a godsend to Tony after everything he has been through.

‘He’s a super guy who wouldn’t love him. I know I do.

‘I don’t know of many men who could have got through what Tony experienced.

‘When we first met and he told me everything I was shocked but that made me like him even more for being so honest and open.

‘We’ve both been through tough times so being able to support each other has been brilliant.

‘We are very much looking forward to the future together.’

Tony (pictured) who says Elaine has ‘restored [his] faith and confidence in life’ wants his story to help other men who are dealing with domestic violence

Tony is still waiting to divorce his ex wife so talk of marriage is off the table for the present time.

He added:’Just waking up each day feeling happy and loved is enough for me.

‘Elaine really has restored my faith and confidence in life. She’s a wonderful woman’

Tony added:’Male domestic violence is such a taboo subject amongst men. If my story helps even just one man come forward it will be worth it.

‘If I hadn’t reached out I doubt I would be here today to enjoy my life with Elaine.’
