Bhutan has submitted Pawo Choyning Dorji’s The Monk and the Gun<\/em> for the Best International Feature Film race at the 2024 Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

The announcement follows the film’s buzzy world premiere at Telluride and comes on the eve of its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.<\/p>\n

The decision was made by the Committee for Selection of Films for International Awards, formed by the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA).<\/p>\n

This is the second time film by writer and director Dorji to have represented Bhutan, and after his first film, Lunana: A Yak In The Classroo<\/em>m, was submitted by the Himalayan territory for the 2020 awards, and went on to be nominated.<\/p>\n

Lunana was Bhutan’s second Oscar entry after the The Cup<\/em> by Khyentse Norbui in 1999.<\/p>\n

“The Monk And The Gun<\/em> stood out as the unanimous choice of the Selection Committee. The film has garnered acclaim for its innovative storytelling, unique thematic elements, strong narrative, and exceptional performances by the cast. It was seen as a true reflection of Bhutan, both in terms of its narrative and technical craftsmanship,” said BICMA.<\/p>\n

The movie was produced by Jean-Christopher Simon, Hsu Feng, Stephanie Lai and Dorji, and executive produced by Zhang Xin, William Horberg, Lisa Henson, Kris Eiamsakulrat, Chayamporn Taeratanachai, and Janee Pennington.<\/p>\n

It is a production of Dangphu Dingpu: A 3 Pigs Production, Films Boutique, Journey to the East Films, Tomson Films,Closer Media, Animandala, N8 Studios, Wooden Trailer Productions. <\/p>\n

Sales are being handled by UTA in the US and Films Boutique internationally.<\/p>\n
