EastEnders fans are convinced Max Branning (Jake Wood) could be making a return to Albert Square.

The car salesman fled Walford in 2021 after going on the run with his young granddaughter Abi.

Fans will remember that Abi is also the granddaughter of the recently retuned Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins).

Baby Abi's parents are Steven Beale, who died in 2017, and Abi Branning, who died the following year in 2018.

In 2017, a revenge-fuelled Max encouraged Steven to kill Jane Beale (Laurie Brent) amid his plan against the Beales for having him imprisoned for Lucy Beale's murder.

When Steven changed his mind Max attacked him, causing fatal injuries.

Some fans of the BBC One soap have taken to social media to discuss the potential comeback of Max.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one viewer wrote: "If Max does somehow come back with Abi JR, I wonder if Cindy will try and fight Max for her or try and track her down."

"Do you know what Anna and Gina also have now??? A niece called Abi… THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO BRING BACK MAX BRANNING!!!!"," another noted.

A third social media user said: ""I never thought I'd be saying this, but bringing Max Branning back with baby Abi (Cindys grandkid, Stephen's child) would make excellent drama – as Max and Cindy fight over the child then inevitably fall for each other – after Christmas though please – my brain hurts."

Cindy made her dramatic return to Walford last week after 25 years away, causing carnage as the Beales and the Knights collided.

With bombshells about her past and her real reason for leaving both her families coming to light, it made for tense scenes.

With more to be addressed about what happened while Cindy was away and how she found Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) over a year ago, it seems there's much more to explore.

Viewers now know that in 1998, Cindy faked her death and went into witness protection after informing on her cellmate while in prison.

From there she was given a new identity, Rose Knight, and she met and married George Knight (Colin Salmon).

They lived in Marbella with their two children Anna and Gina until she left one day in 2014.

This was because she'd discovered her daughter Lucy had been killed.

Fastforward to the present time, Cindy knows it was Bobby Beale (Clay Milner Russel), her partner Ian's son, who killed Lucy in 2014.

Bobby accidentally killed his sister during a row, and the crime was covered up for two years, with Max being framed for the murder in the meantime.

Fans will have to wait and see if Max shows up in Albert Square once again.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 7.30pm
