Who is Black Coffee and how old is the DJ? | The Sun

SOUTH African house music DJ and producer Black Coffee has built an impressive career over the last two decades.

Having won a Grammy award and worked with megastars such as Drake and David Guetta – here's everything you need to know about the artist.

Who is Black Coffee?

Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, better known by his stage name Black Coffee, is a South African DJ, record producer and songwriter.

He established his own record label Soulistic Music, and released his debut self-titled album Black Coffee in 2005.

Coffee was married to actress and TV presenter Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa from 2011 to July 2019.

They have two children together,r Asante and Anesu.

Coffee also has two more children from a previous relationship, but the identity of their mother is unknown.

Speaking about his first child, Coffee told TshisaLive : “I was only 23 when he was born…even though all the odds were against me…being a student and no job this was one of the happiest days of my life.

How old is Black Coffee?

Black Coffee is 46-years-old.

He was born on March 11, 1976 in Umlazi, South Africa.

Coffee later moved to Umtata, which was only 18 miles away from the home of Nelson Mandela.

He then gained a degree in Jazz Studies at Technikon Natal, now known as the Durban University of Technology.

When did Black Coffee become a DJ and how did he become famous?

Coffee began his career in 1994 and became well known after he participated in the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy.

Since then he has released nine studio albums, as well as a live DVD.

Throughout his musical career his accolades include: eight SAMA, four DJ Awards, two Metro FM Awards, one Grammy award.

In 2016, he performed at Coachella Valley Music, Arts Festival, and Ultra Music Festival.

And by the end of that year he was ranked 91st on Resident Advisor's top 100 DJs list.

In Feburary 2021, Coffee released his seventh studio album, Subconsciously, which one the award for best Dance/Electronic Album at the 64th annual Grammy Awards.

The album features the likes of Pharrell Williams, Usher, David Guetta and Diplo.

He co-wrote and co-produced three songs on Drake's 2022 album Honestly, Nevermind.

However, fans may remember the two previously worked together five years ago on Drake’s 2017 album More Life.
