Martin Scorsese has brought back together some of the greatest actors of all time for his latest film, The Irishman. Oscar winners Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are together as mobsters all vying for their way. The film has now had its official trailer released, and Scorsese fans are viewing it with interest.
How can I watch the official trailer for The Irishman?
The Irishman trailer has been released on YouTube and via the Netflix social media accounts, as it has been produced for distribution by the channel.
The film has been hotly anticipated since it was announced as Scorsese’s next film in 2014, with Hollywood heavyweights De Niro, Pacino and Pesci all signing up within a month of the announcement.
There are a number of trailers currently available to be watched, but the latest is the first full length that gives a flavour of the tone of the movie.
What is The Irishman about?
The Irishman is based on a memoir, I Heard You Paint Houses, by former investigator Charles Brandt.
In this memoir, Brandt chronicles the life of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, an alleged mafia hitman who confesses the crimes he committed while working for the Bufalino crime family.
Sheeran was born in 1920 in Pennsylvania, and enlisted in the army at age 21, where he claims he did 411 days of combat duty.
In this time, he says he have developed a callousness about taking humans life and even claimed to have participated in massacres and some war crimes which violated various conventions.
After the war, he alleged to have made money on the side of his truck driving job by committing crimes, including murder for hire, becoming an associate of Mafia bosses Russell Bufalino and Angelo Bruno.
He became a prominent member of the Teamsters’ Union, a labour union which, during Sheeran and gangster Jimmy Hoffa’s time, was influenced by organised crime, according to a select committee.
According to Sheeran, he killed gangster Joe Gallo and Jimmy Hoffa, who was the union president for years before he was eventually declared dead after disappearing.
What do we learn from the trailer of The Irishman?
In the film, Sheeran (Robert De Niro) is seen talking to a lawyer (Ray Romano) and claiming never to have committed a crime, already revealing the tone of Scorsese’s next film.
As this continues, Sheeran is heard: “It was like the army – you followed orders, you did the right thing, you got rewarded.
“Back then there was nobody in this country who didn’t know who Jimmy Hoffa was.”
The film’s premise is that an older Sheeran is recalling his past endeavours with mobsters, and he is seen in flashback with the likes of Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) and Angelo Bruno (Harvey Keitel) in various dodgy deals.
The movie is clearly action packed, as well as full of fast talking mobsters all ordering hits on one another – with Sheeran at the centre of it all.
The Irishman is released on Netflix on November 27
