The Good Place star refused Netflixs You audition over sex scenes

‘You’ season 5 confirmed by Netflix

Jameela Jamil has revealed to You’s Penn Badgley she turned down a role in season four of the Netflix drama over sex scene fears.

The Good Place actress and body neutrality activist joined Badgley and co-presenters Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari on his latest episode of podcast Podcrushed, during which they spoke about their time in the industry.

Speaking about her efforts to feel more comfortable in her body, Jamil revealed she had placed a blanket ban on sex scenes – which put a halt to her potentially joining Badgley’s much-loved Netflix series, You.

She said: “I was supposed to audition for the most recent season of your show. My character was supposed to be quite sexy, and I pulled out of the audition, because I am so shy about anything sexy that I can’t.”

Jamil later joked she had retroactively regretted the decision, because on the release of season four, part one, Badgley had opened up about his own decision to no longer do sex scenes the show was known for.

“You f***ing came out and was like, ‘yeah, I’m not doing sex scenes anymore’,” she laughed. “I didn’t even know that was a boundary that we could draw!

“But then I was like, ‘I should have gone and done the f***ing show.'”

Badgley then jokingly offered her a role in the upcoming fifth season, with Jamil joking she’d do it if she was an “asexual person he murdered”.

Speaking about sex scenes in general, Jamil admitted she struggled to feel comfortable with them, and explained: “I don’t think I’ve ever been someone who would have enjoyed objectifying myself, personally. But that’s also because I have so much deep, childhood sexual trauma stuff.

“So I think that was never in the cards for me. You know, I still wear the little skirt or the busty top, but like, occasionally.

“But generally, I feel quite protective of myself in that way. Like, I don’t do sex scenes.”

The sentiments were previously echoed by Badgley, who told fans on the same podcast back in February he had asked showrunner Sera Gamble to put him in less sexual positions on the show.

“This is actually a decision I had made before I took the show,” he told his co-hosts at the time. “I don’t think I had ever mentioned it publicly, but one of the main things is like, do I want to put myself back in a career path where I’m just always a romantic lead?”

The actor, who has been married to Domino Kirke since 2017, added: “Like, fidelity, in every relationship, and especially my marriage, is important to me. And it just got to that point where I don’t want to do that.”

While he acknowledged sexual scenes had become a fundamental part of the show and they couldn’t go from “100 to zero”, he credited Gamble for taking his request on board.

As a result, while season four did feature sex scenes, Badgley and his co-star Charlotte Ritchie were largely clothed, or the sex was implied.

You is available on Netflix now.
