Outlander fans have loved the romantic storyline between Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) since they were first introduced back in season one. However, the pair have faced a number of trials and tribulations over the years, including spending 20 years apart. Express.co.uk exclusively spoke to author Diana Gabaldon about why the pair will always find their way back to each other.

Will Jamie and Claire stay together in Outlander?

Jamie and Claire have not had a conventional love story in Outlander so far.

They were first drawn together when Claire found herself travelling 200 years into the past at Craigh Na Dun.

Then what started as a marriage of convenience grew into a romantic love affair between the pair.

Over the seasons, there have been a number of hardships for the duo from losing their first child to spending many years apart.

However, one of the constants so far in the series is how they always find their way back to one another.

Therefore, understandably as the series progresses, viewers will be anxious about what the future holds for the pair.

In an exclusive chat with novel author Diana Gabaldon, she didn’t reveal what exactly is next for the couple.

However, she did speak about why Jamie and Claire will always find their way back to each other in the show.

When asked about what made their relationship so special in the show, Gabaldon replied: “They’re very committed to each other.

“They take it as a sacred vow, which I must say a lot of people don’t these days.

“But you know times have changed and people seem to regard marriage as not a sacred relationship, not a matter of permanent vows etc.

“It’s all about ‘oh I have to save up money to have a tremendous wedding’ and nothing to do with the person you’re marrying, which I think is shocking.

“But you know, to each their own. I’ve been with my husband for 48 years so I have a lot of old fashioned ideas about it.

“But so do a lot of other people, which is that they really like the notion of enduring love – that people actually do love each other that much that they will sacrifice for each other.

“That they care for the other person as much or more occasionally than they do for themselves.

“This is the nature of true marriage, so I think people are interested in that.

“But perhaps a little wistful in not seeing that very often in what you might call real life.”

In Gabaldon’s own terms, it certainly seems their connection will continue as long as they’re both living in her beloved book series.

While she is currently working on her ninth book, fans of the show are awaiting season six to see what’s next for the pair.

This has been given the green light by Starz and is expected to see the duo back with plenty more romance as well as some inevitable hardship.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon’s Prime Video now.
