Michelle Heaton broke down in tears as told Lorraine Kelly she was sorry for drinking before appearing on the ITV daytime programme in the past.
The Liberty X singer joined the programme on Wednesday morning to talk about her recovery from alcohol addiction and kicked off her interview by apologising to the presenter.
‘I wanted to say sorry to you before we begin because there were times I drank before I sat on this sofa and you trusted me,’ Michelle said. ‘And I did campaigns for you.
‘I love you so much because you’ve always been there to support me and I want to say I’m sorry.’
‘Don’t be daft, you don’t have to apologise to me or to anybody else,’ Lorraine replied.
‘The easy path would have been to keep drinking. The hard thing was to say, “no, I’m not going to do this anymore, I’ve got an amazing husband and family and friends”, and that takes real guts.’
Lorraine added: ‘You are one of the strongest women that I know.’
Many viewers applauded Michelle for her honesty, with TV presenter Anna Richardson writing: ‘I have to say…what an incredible woman you are Michelle. I filmed with you a few years ago & you were kind and honest then. How amazing to see your recovery. Keep strong girl.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another penned: ‘Such an inspiring interview. Very moving and thank you for being so open. Your family are amazing.’
Michelle checked into rehab clinic, The Priory, in April after spending months in lockdown drinking alcohol every day.
In an emotional pre-recorded video interview, Michelle and husband Hugh Hanley gave a searingly honest account of living with addiction.
Michelle, who entered rehab earlier this year said: ‘It was five years really the trauma of all my health issues, it blew up. I just didn’t know how to stop drinking.
‘Now I worry, I worry about what my addictions had on me physically and also on my family. I had him by my side [Hugh] but I pushed him away.’
Hugh added: ‘The last three or four years have been extremely tough knowing that Michelle was in there but the addictions were ripping her apart.
‘Sometimes the way she would be towards me and the kids wasn’t nice but I knew that wasn’t Michelle and it wasn’t who she really is and I kind of held on to that.
‘Whenever I brought it up and addressed it, it was just an argument or, “you don’t understand I’m not an alcoholic”.’
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
