BBC viewers saw Queen Mary College London take on Oxford Brookes in Monday night’s episode of University Challenge. The teams went head to head on the show, with host Jeremy Paxman reeling off questions on a wide range of topics. However, the broadcaster aired his frustrations with both teams when they failed to get a starter question correct.
When the teams were neck and neck with 10 points each when they moved onto a picture round.
“Right, we’re going to take a picture round now,” Jeremy said, as a picture of an embroidery technique was shown on-screen.
“For your picture starter you’ll see the diagram of an embroidery stitch. 10 points if you can name the stitch,” he told the teams.
McGill from Queen Mary College London was first to buzz in and attempt to answer the question.
“Back stitch,” he said, however he was quickly informed he had the incorrect answer when Jeremy replied: “No.”
After a brief pause, Lloyd Jones from Oxford Brookes buzzed in and said: “Cross stitch.”
“No that’s a blanket stitch or a button hole stitch,” Jeremy announced.
He went on to make it clear he was disappointed that neither team had got the right answer.
“Okay so we will take the picture bonuses in a moment or two, but first off someone’s going to get a starter question right,” he remarked.
The audience laughed at Jeremy’s remark and it seems as though viewers at home did too.
Many fans took to Twitter to comment on the host’s cheeky comment about the performance of the contestants.
One viewer wrote: “‘Someone’s gonna have to get a question right’ Sassy Jez #UniversityChallenge.”
“Paxman is genuinely frustrated at these teams and he’s not even hiding it lmao #UniversityChallenge,” another added.
A third agreed: “Jeremy seems particularly unimpressed with the knowledge of the teams tonight #universitychallenge.”
Meanwhile some viewers seemed to think Jeremy was being overly harsh on the players.
One commented: “Jeremy Paxman’s disgust at every wrong answer on #UniversityChallenge has gone up a notch.”
“Paxman has got such an attitude #UniversityChallenge,” another said.
A third added: “Paxman sounds so disappointed when they get a question right! #UniversityChallenge.”
The episode ended with Oxford Brookes on just 90 points, while Queen Mary College London won the episode with 115 points.
University Challenge airs Mondays at 8:30pm on BBC Two.
