Game of Thrones sex specialist opens up about what really happens in kinky bedroom scenes

The hit HBO show is jam-packed with saucy scenes, though viewers don’t always understand how difficult they can be to film.

Alicia Rodis was hired by the network as a “sex coordinator” to oversee the steamier parts of the script and to ensure that production went smoothly.

The former stunt coordinator set up the business Intimacy Directors International with several of her pals from the industry, after realising that there was a gap in the market.

Game of Thrones was one of the many shows that Rodis worked on, in a bid to make sure that actors were fully comfortable getting their kit off on the screen.

In an interview with The Atlantic, she opened up about the tricks of the trade, and the insider’s secrets to creating a seamless sex scene.

One of her main jobs is to ensure that actors’ private parts are neatly covered up so that they don’t touch each other in the middle of the shot.

A flesh-toned cover-all for privates, named a “shibue” for females or a “hibue” for males, is used to hide their nether regions, with a silicone guard popped on top to keep it in place.

Sometimes the 38-year-old is tasked with “setting the number of pumps” in a sex scene so that each character knows what to expect, and to avoid awkwardness.

On top of that, she’s often responsible for shaving the bikini lines of actors before they get busy beneath the sheets.

One of the main scenes she worked on for the final season of Game of Thrones was the hanky panky between Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, and another was the fling between Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth.

Rodis think it’s important to get sex scenes right on the telly, in a bid to send out a positive message to young viewers.

She explained: “People who are growing up with the internet and just seeing a certain type of pornography? I think we owe it to them to show forms of sexuality that are not the top 50 videos on Pornhub.”
