The Escape To The Chateau couple broke their silence yesterday after a recording emerged of a foul-mouthed rant by Angel Strawbridge.
The star – who with husband Dick has been filmed for seven years turning their chateau in France into a wedding venue – was heard in the leaked recording berating producers of the hit series in 2021.
Hours after the audio was released by Deadline news website, Angel, 45, and Dick, 63, took to Instagram to thank the show’s fans and to say that its end had been a “family decision”.
It was earlier reported that they had been axed following a review into their conduct by Channel 4. In the recording, Angel rants about someone posting a picture that she says resembles Dick.
She says: “Who is that inspired by when you’re f****** working at the chateau? Just tell me that and then you can f****** leave and this is me f****** angry because I think you’re a f***** up little ****. Do not work in this chateau and then post dark, weird pictures that I find quite insulting and do not smirk. You know what, you can just f*** off.”
On Instagram, the couple wrote to fans of the series: “Thank you for inviting us into your living rooms. You have watched our children grow up and shared our adventures.
‘It was a Strawbridge family decision early last year to conclude Escape to the Chateau, but we have loved every moment and, despite the many challenges, we refused to give up on our dream, and in doing so have filled the chateau with love and laughter, and, most importantly, have created the most wonderful home for our family.
“Whilst we have indeed parted ways with Channel 4, we are hugely grateful to them and their teams for their support and creativity over the years. The future truly could not look more exciting and we thank you for your continued love and support.”
The series turned them into household names as 2.5million viewers turned in to see the renovation of their 19th-century Chateau de la Motte-Husson in Martigne-sur-Mayenne.
But recent weeks have seen them branded “a nightmare to work with” and Channel 4 confirmed it had cut ties with the couple. The series was previously made by Spark Media Partners, which also allegedly dropped them due to a feud.
A source close to the show said: “Dick and Angel come across on screen as the most gorgeous and lovely couple, literally like butter wouldn’t melt, but they’re not like that off-screen.
“Production is with them at the chateau for weeks so they can’t hide their real characters – they can’t turn it on for two hours of recording then not go back to their real persona.
“They’re just spiky and volatile people and, as you can imagine, that’s a nightmare to work with.”
The couple have put their £38,000-a-time wedding service on hold. Also on the backburner is their Chateau Under The Stars experience where guests sleep in a glass dome for £350 a night.
Angel is reportedly now looking to increase her profile with a TV gig on Strictly or I’m A Celebrity.
A C4 spokesman said: “Following a review, we have taken the decision not to work with Dick and Angel on any new productions in the future.”
