Maria Connor (played by Samia Longchambon) is set to come to blows with Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) when the pair both decide to run for the local council. Next week on Coronation Street, the real reason for Maria’s political ambitions are revealed, and it becomes clear she’ll stop at nothing to get her way. So when she’s approached by Phil Whittaker (Jamie Kenna), who is on the planning committee, will a romance blossom between them even though he’s dating Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine).

In scenes to air next week, the truth behind Maria’s councillor ambitions will be revealed when Gary Windass (Mikey North) admits the local council is planning to bulldoze the playing fields at the Red Rec and build a new road in their place.

Maria complains to Sally who promises to find out what she can about the plans.

Sally later warns Maria that she’s studied the council’s plans for the new bypass and she’s on a hiding to nothing.

Refusing to be beaten, Maria decides to meet up with a reporter from the Gazette.

With the support of Ken Barlow, Daniel Osbourne, Aggie Bailey, Roy Cropper and Mary Taylor – a formidable bunch – Maria organises a demonstration outside the council building.

Fiz’s boyfriend Phil arrives and reveals that he’s on the planning committee.

Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) also shows up on the scene, but orders the protesters to stand aside.

When the reporter from the Gazette arrives, a desperate Maria offers him another exclusive.

Having finished his meeting, Phil then tells Maria he’d like to buy her a coffee and hear what she has to say.

However, could their coffee lead to more than just a business conversation about the plans?

Phil is in a relationship with Fiz, but could Maria try and charm him into helping her get her way?

Will he be swayed to go behind Fiz’s back and start having an affair with Maria – or even leave Fiz altogether for Maria?

Fiz recently picked Phil over her ex-husband Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), who had begged for her to take him back after he cheated with Alina Pop (Ruxandra Porojnicu).

How would Fiz deal with the heartbreak if she discovered Phil has cheated on her with Maria?

Could she try and patch things up with Tyrone, or will she try and have some time alone to work on herself?

Later on, when Sally finds out from Aggie Bailey (Lorna Laidlaw) that Maria is running for council, Sally reckons Maria knows nothing about local politics.

When Sally announces that she too is going to stand in the local council elections, Maria realises she’s got a fight on her hands.

In the Rovers, Fiz and Phil offer Maria their full support with her council campaign.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
