The Years And Years frontman and Sir Elton performed a version of the Pet Shop Boys' 1980s track – inspired by the Channel 4 TV series of the same name.

One overwhelmed viewer summed up sentiments on Twitter, writing: "So emotional after that performance by #eltonjohn and #ollyalexander.

"The queer kid in me who never thought he’d see multiple generations of gay men singing together on television is smiling. #BRITs"

In the short number Sir Elton, 74, accompanied Olly, 30, on the piano whilst the It's A Sin actor commanded the microphone.

They sang at the biggest night in British music to an indoor crowd of thousands of key workers.

The pair were also joined on stage by drag queens while Sir Elton's husband David Furnish delivered an introduction highlighting the work of the Elton John Aids Foundation.

One viewer raved: "Wow! @alexander_olly singing #ItsASin with Elton John, draped over the piano like a cabaret diva is pure queer pop perfection! Olly, this is ASTONISHING"

And another viewer remarked on Twitter: "that elton john x olly alexander collab was pretty amazing #BRITs"

Channel 4's It's A Sin aired earlier this year and told the story of a group of young pals living in London in the 1980s HIV/Aids crisis.

The show starred a string of newcomers including Olly, Shaun Dooley, Omari Douglas, Nathaniel Curtis and Lydia West.

Renowned actors Keeley Hawes, Stephen Fry, Neil Patrick Harris, Tracy Ann Oberman, also had starring roles.
