The Strictly Come Dancing launch show saw Anton Du Beke take his seat as a permanent judge for the 2021 series. While he was a stand in judge last year, fans were thrilled to see Anton on the judging panel for the whole series. Many commented he looked happy in his “rightful” place.
Host Claudia Winkleman noted Anton looked “right at home” on the judging panel and asked wheat the celebrities needed to do to win the series.
“You don’t happen to mean this little old thing?” he asked as he lifted up the coveted trophy.
“Do you? To be honest with you, I don’t really know. This is the closest I’ve ever been to it.
“But they tell me hard work, listen to your partner, practise, practise, and practise.”
Viewers quickly took to Twitter to comment on Anton’s new role and share their joy at seeing him judging.
Helen Corcoran tweeted: “Is Anton a proper judge now? He was great last year when he had to step in. #SCD2021 #Strictly.”
Dr Heidi added: “Ah, Anton. Glad to see you taking your rightful place #Strictly #anton #SCD2021.”
“Oh the joy I feel seeing Anton replacing Bruno #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing,” Jessica Aloft shared.
Denise continued: “Had forgotten that Anton was a judge this year. #Strictly #SCD.”
Katie posted: “So happy #Strictly is back! Even though I don’t know any of the celebrities being Dutch. And Anton as a judge! I love it!”
“Here they are!!!!! Our judging panel. And welcome to new judge Anton Du Beke!!! #Strictly,” Joe Mendy added.
Ahead of the live show, McFly star Tom Fletcher was the favourite to win the Glitterball Trophy.
Anton recently opened up about his new role and admitted he would be “mortified” if he was ever axed to leave.
He told Radio Times: “All of us are always waiting for the phone call about next year.
“The most important thing is just being on the show, because I love it.
“I’d be absolutely mortified if I had to leave. Bereft. It’s such a huge part of my life.”
Betfair marked his odds of winning at 9/2 with Eastenders star Rose Ayling-Ellis just behind him with odds of 11/2,
At the other end of the scale, Judi Love has odds of 25/1 to win as does actress Nina Wadia.
Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “On the eve of the UK’s most glamorous show starting, Tom Fletcher is the 4/1 favourite to waltz his way to the Glitterball trophy, while Rose Ayling-Ellis (11/2) and Rhys Stephenson (6/1) are close on his heels.
“Adam Peaty is 10/1 to follow up Olympic Gold with the Stricly crown, while Robert Webb is 8/1 and AJ Odudu 10/1.”
