Antiques Roadshow: Sean Connery’s Bond jacket fetches hefty sum in private valuation

Antiques Roadshow: Expert values James Bond jacket at £25,000

Fiona Bruce can regularly be seen looking over some fascinating finds brought in to the Antiques Roadshow by members of the public. In a recent episode, host Fiona visited world-famous Pinewood Studios to look see what happened next to some memorable finds from over the years. And Fiona was wowed to find out how much a jacket worn by actor Sean from the film ‘Diamonds are Forever,’ could fetch at auction.

She met up with expert memorabilia expert Stephen Lane who gave insight into some garments worn in the Bond franchise.

There was a selection fo stunning items on display, which all caught the host’s eye.

Explaining what the value of each piece was dependent on, it seemed there is a wide array of factors

The expert said it comes down to “how successful the film is and how much screen time it has received.”

As well as this, the film’s continued popularity can also act as a mark of its value today.

Moving on to the jacket, Fiona was left intrigued by the fact it was a “screen-match” which means Sean wore it during shooting for Diamonds are Forever.

Stephen began: “There are a number of tells on this jacket that we’ve matched-up to behind the scenes shots, or stills from the film.”

Examining the piece further, he detailed: “We’ve managed to match the weave on the lapel, so the very distinctive weave of the cloth there.

“In addition to that is the cuff, so the spacing of the buttons on the cuff.”

Looking at the inside of the jacket, he added: “If you open the jacket up, on the inside it has a very distinctive lining.

“It’s stitched in, in a specific manner and we’ve managed to match that up on-screen as well.”

Fiona was impressed by the analysis of the famous jacket, remarking: “Very fancy!

“Gosh that’s real anorak territory, isn’t it? When you start matching the weave and things like that.

The expert laughed: “I mean, yeah. It’s not so much anorak, it’s more attention to detail.”

And he went on to give the all-important valuation of the Bond artefact.

“This has an estimated value of somewhere in the region of about £25,000,” Stephen said, leaving Fiona speechless.

“Wow!” Fiona responded. “And this little stain here, does this add or detract from its value, Stephen?”

“I think it’s more likely to be post-production than something that took place during production.

“So we wouldn’t touch it now, wouldn’t mess with it now, but it’s not going to detract from its value,” he clarified.

“So, this isn’t Sean sort of dropping his lunch?” she queried, with the expert responding: “I don’t think so, no!”
