Jonnie Irwin was tasked with finding pub landlady Alison her forever home on the Costa Dorada, Spain in the latest edition of A Place in the Sun. Alison was looking to buy a smallholding where she can grow vegetables and keep animals but the channel 4 expert’s offerings were not all to her liking.

Alison had a budget of £70,000 and invited her friend Theresa along on the search.

One of the properties required some work and would have required some negotiation to get it within Alison’s budget.

The landlady initially fell in love with the house but Jonnie warned: “Go back in there with your eyes open.

“There is money to be spent on this place and even with negotiation it’s right at the top of your budget.”

“Work needs to be done for sure,” she agreed. “Not too much but I’d want a good electricity supply if the solar power isn’t adequate for a fridge and freezer.”

“Is it a contender?” Jonnie asked and Alison replied: “It is at the right price.”

The expert’s next property was a disaster and Alison immediately admitted it wasn’t for her.

The two-bedroom house came with a paddy field but the flat land surrounding the property wasn’t appealing.

“The space is great inside and it’s nice and bright in here,” she said. “But I’m not impressed with the outside.

“Inside, it’s a really good space but outside it’s challenging. It’s the bareness I think.”

Jonnie quipped: “You have cemented in my mind where we need to head.

“It’s funny you can talk about the attributes but all the way through the location is clearly most important.”

For Jonnie’s final property he pulled out all the stops and offered Alison a four-bedroom house with olive and almond trees for £20,000 under budget.

Jonnie turned to Theresa and said: “You can see Alison in this place, can’t you?”

“Absolutely it’s great and a good size,” Theresa replied.

“This is the stuff of dreams that you think you’ll never get for your budget,” Alison quipped.

Once they had seen the property, Jonnie told the friends to go away and have a think.

“I already know what I want to do,” Alison remarked.

“Let’s calm down for a moment,” Jonnie hit back as he urged them to take some time alone.

Later, Alison celebrated having an offer being accepted on her dream home.

“It feels like the perfect place for the next stage in my life,” she commented.

“Well done, congratulations, good luck and cheers,” Jonnie added.

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 3pm.
