Reading and Leeds Festival 2021 confirmed as government announces lockdown exit

Organisers for Reading and Leeds Festival have announced they will be going ahead with plans for the UK summer music celebrations this year.

Reading and Leeds Festival are the first organisers to announce plans to reopen the festival gates after the government announced their recent outline of the gradual relaxation of lockdown rules on Tuesday 22.

Stormzy, Post Malone and Queens of the Stone Age are among some acts who have already been confirmed to play at the summer festival this year.

Others who are expected to perform are Lewis Capaldi, Disclosure, Liam Gallagher, Doja Cat and KSI, with many more to be announced next Monday, March 1.

Reading and Leeds Festival made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon on Twitter, which said: "Reading and Leeds 2021 – Following the government's recent announcement, we can't wait to get back to the fields this summer – let's go."

Music fans across the country have rejoiced in the recent announcement, with many already purchasing tickets in advance.

One Twitter user said: "Should I buy two tickets? I can get two! I'm going to cry," with another adding: "I'll find £300 quid some how because f*** me we have to go."

  • When will social distancing and the need to use face masks end?

  • Hairdressers and nail salons to reopen in April along with all non-essential businesses

However some users have concerns for how organisers are going to keep the venue safe for attendees

One user asked: "Will there be Covid testing on entrance?" with another adding: "Can you imagine how fun this is gonna be if it goes ahead."

Many music fans have decided to skip the much-loved festival due to Covid-19 fears, with some predicting that the decision to reopen the festival chain is too soon and will cause another nationwide lockdown.

Bosses have yet to confirm plans for how the festival will go ahead given the current Covid-19 restrictions, or how social distancing measures will be used between acts.

The last time the festival took place, the festival attracted more than 100,000 people to their Reading venue, with tickets selling out a month in advance.

One user said: "Let's go spreading Covid and putting us back in another lockdown, irresponsible if you ask me."

Another commented: "Oh yes… we haven't had enough of lockdown and having it back later this year (again) should be fun… Let's make our money fast and be prepared for the next six to seven months of no work."
