During the height of their fame, One Direction worked with a few different names. In particular, 1D worked with singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson on a song tailor-made for their album, Up All Night. After that, the band looked into working with some different acts, including some rock bands. This line-up of potential work partners included The 1975.
The 1975 have made waves in the music scene since the arrival of their debut self-titled album in 2013.
The album was a success, receiving various four and five-star reviews and topping the UK Album Charts upon release.
The record also won them the Best British Group Award at the Brit Awards, giving them some further recognition.
So when singer and songwriter of the band, Matty Healy, was approached by 1D to work together he was ecstatic.
Matty told the BBC: “One Direction were doing some recording in London, they were really into our album.
“So they invited me to come down and said: ‘Let’s work on a tune.’ I was like kerching! Free money!”
However excited Matty was to work with the pop group, he wasn’t entirely prepared for their meeting.
He continued: “I turned up and I didn’t know if I had anything.”
Without anything to go off of, he instead looked towards his forthcoming second album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It.
This meeting was just before the record’s release in 2016. The album was a gigantic success upon its release. The sophomore entry shot to the top of the UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian album charts.
Before that, however, Matty considered donating one of the album’s tracks to 1D.
He said: “I was working on the record and I thought: ‘What are the poppier demos?’ So I played them The Sound.”

The Sound didn’t go down as well as Matty had hoped, he revealed.
The 32-year-old said: “They were like: ‘It’s alright.’ But they wanted to do a song that sounded like one of our other songs.”
The singer wouldn’t reveal which of his band’s other songs he played for One Direction, but added that whatever he did show them “wasn’t close to being a One Direction song, but they did hear it.”
The Sound was later certified platinum for The 1975, after selling 600,000 records in the UK.
Although it didn’t work out for Matty and The 1975 at the time, that wasn’t the end of the two bands’ relationships.
In 2016 The 1975 appeared on the Radio One Live Lounge where they covered One Direction’s first single, What Makes You Beautiful.
The band’s cover went viral on social media and was entered into the BBC Music Awards for Best Cover.
In 2016 The 1975’s performance won Radio 1 Live Lounge Performance of the Year at the awards.
