Beyoncé Releases the “Brown Skin Girl” Music Video

Beyoncé’s song “Brown Skin Girl” now has a solo music video, using footage from her visual album, Black Is King, which arrived on the Disney+ streaming platform last month. Matching the track’s uplifting message of self-love and empowerment for Black girls, the visuals star an array of Black women, ranging from young debutantes to Beyoncé with her family and friends.

A number of celebrities, including Naomi Campbell and fellow model Adut Akech, Lupita Nyong’o, and Kelly Rowland, make cameos. In one scene, the singer is also joined by her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson; her three-year-old daughter, Rumi Carter; and her eight-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, who takes a solo at the end of the song.

“It was so important to me in ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that we represented all different shades of brown, and I wanted every character to be shot in a regal light,” Bey said of the video’s inspiration in a message to Good Morning America. She added that director Jenn Nkiru came up with the debutante theme.

“My greatest inspiration comes from Black people, specifically Black women,” Nkiru said in the statement.

Beyoncé continued, “It was important that we’re all in this together and we all are celebrating each other.”
