My grandson is applying to join the Army but I'm so worried he'll be killed

DEAR DEIDRE: FIGHTING in foreign lands is not what I want for my only grandson but he is applying to join the Army.

He is 17 and I am so worried.

I don’t want him to get killed in action. He’s such a lovely boy.

I think other members of the family are encouraging him to do this, perhaps even pressuring him.

I’m his 71-year-old nan.

What can I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: Do find out if having a career in the military is something he really wants.

If it is, the best thing you can do is support him. Offloading your concerns on to him wouldn’t be fair.

If he admits this path is not what he wants, you can encourage him to stand up for himself.

If your grandson wants to talk to someone impartial, recommend The Mix, which supports under-25s (themix.org.uk, 0808 808 4994).

For many, a career in the military is fulfilling and a great way to make lasting friendships.
