Mary J. Blige is the latest high profile celeb to back Ray McGuire for mayor of New York City.
In a new ad, the singer describes McGuire as the best choice because of his “upbringing and being raised by a single parent mother. He understands the struggle of so many New Yorkers because I’m a woman with a single parent mother who’s seen it all. He understands,” she said.
“He is the businessman with the business plan… He’s not about the look. He’s about the grind. He cares about black and brown people getting ahead and children, and women,” she adds.
A retired Citigroup executive, McGuire first announced his run with a splashy ad narrated by his pal Spike Lee. Other of the candidate’s celeb backers include LL Cool J., Steve Martin, Nas, Donna Karan, Jay-Z, Naomi Campbell and Diddy.
Despite his celebrity backing, McGuire continues to trail in the polls, along with Shaun Donovan. A poll released this week had the duo at the back of the pack, with Eric Adams leading the field, and Maya Wiley making headway after support from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Primary day is June 22, and 10 days of early voting begins on Saturday.
Blige’s support comes on the heels of a strong “women for Ray” push launched earlier this week.
His wife, Crystal McCray McGuire, told Page Six: “Ray has a large coalition of women across a broad range of groups who support him because of his years of being a private public servant, where he has always supported women owned businesses, gender pay equity and job creation for women from the arts to education to finance… Ray has integrity and is a real ally of women.”
