I’ve been fostering a dog for a friend but now I can’t bear to give him back

DEAR DEIDRE:  I’VE been fostering a dog for a friend but now I can’t bear to give him back.

I’m a woman of 35 and this friend is a man of 45. He went to work in Saudi and asked me to look after his little terrier. I am married with a five-year-old son and we now all love this little dog.

My friend has seen the dog once in three years and never asked after him. I’ve paid for all his vaccinations and vet bills. This guy turned up yesterday and took the dog out ratting but the poor thing was exhausted when he got home. I know he lets the dog stand on the front seat of the car without a harness. He talks about taking him back but I’m terrified to let him go.

DEIDRE SAYS: Poor little chap. It is the law now that you must restrain a dog safely in a car.

Explain to this “friend” you all love this dog and see him as part of your family now. If he tries to argue, be firm that his lack of contact and care means he has relinquished his rights of ownership. If he argues about it, say you’re happy to ask the RSPCA to arbitrate.

You could also tot up the costs of caring for the dog all this time and suggest he settles up.
