Ink stains can appear on items of clothing very easily. Pens can quickly become tools which help ruin garments. Express.co.uk has compiled a guide to explain how you can quickly and efficiently remove horrible ink stains from your favourite clothes.

How to remove ink stains

Ink stains can be hard to shift, whether they come from water-based or oil-based ink.

Often you may stain clothes whether it is through inadvertently grazing your sleeve as you write a message or leaving a pen in a pocket.

There are a number of easy fixes for this issue, depending on the type of ink which has caused the stain.

Ballpoint pen ink

Ballpoint pen ink is the easiest to remove from clothes.

The first step you should take to shift the ink is to place a paper towel under the stain and sponge it with rubbing alcohol.

Next, you should use an eyedropper to apply alcohol directly onto the stain or for larger stains pour the alcohol directly into a small dish and immerse the stained area.

Soak the stained area in the alcohol for around 15 and the ink should begin to dissolve almost immediately.

Sponge and blot the stain until no further ink is released from the fabric.

Rinse the stained area under cool water and then apply a pre-wash stain remover and wash it in the hottest water possible with bleach which is safe for the fabric.

Verify the ink has been removed completely before tossing the item in the dryer.

Felt-tip pen ink

Felt-tip pen ink can be a bit more difficult to remove.

Rinse the stain under cold water and then flush it out with as much ink as you can.

You can fill a basin with hot water and then pour in a bleach-free laundry detergent to remove the stain.

You should use the same amount you would to hand wash a blouse and immerse your item completely.

Rub the stain with your fingers and allow it to soak for 30 minutes to an hour.

For stubborn stains, you should allow the item to soak overnight.

Over time you will begin to see the ink stain fade.

You can add some more of the solution or ammonia to the cleaning area to help remove the stain.

When the stain has disappeared, rinse the garment and then rub in a little detergent and wash as you normally would.

Air-dry the item and then you should see the stain has completely disappeared.

Leather

Ink stains on leather can be very difficult to remove.

The best way to remove ink stains on leather is to use rubbing alcohol.

Lightly dip a cotton swab into rubbing alcohol and then very lightly rub at the stain.

If this does not work you should take it to a dry cleaner or a specialised leather service.
