How Love Island stars ditched the six-backs and lip fillers

Less is Casa Amor! The Love Islanders who ditched their six-packs, lip fillers and veneers for a more low-key look after leaving the villa

  • Winter Love Island line-up was unveiled ahead of the new series on January 16
  • New contestants are seemingly sticking to a somewhat similar appearance
  • But previous stars like Molly-Mae Hague have embraced more comfortable look

The Winter Love Island line-up was unveiled on Monday ahead of the new series on January 16 – and fans of the ITV2 show were left baffled by some familiar looking faces.

Many of the ten new singletons have a striking resemblance to past contestants – with one Twitter user even joking: ‘Is there a factory that the producers go to get human clones?’.

However, while the new participants have the stereotypical Love Island look – boasting toned muscles, glamorous makeup or perfect smiles – previous stars, such as Molly-Mae Hague, Jamie Jewitt and Faye Winter, have ditched high octane glamour since their stint on the show.

Here, FEMAIL reveals how some Love Islanders ditched the lip fillers, veneers and six packs and opted for a natural image after leaving the villa.

MOLLY-MAE HAGUE

Molly-Mae Hague appeared on series five of Love Island in 2019, finishing in second place with her current boyfriend Tommy Fury.

The PrettyLittleThing creative director has often opened up about her feelings of embarrassment about getting excessive amounts of filler, which she has since dissolved following her exit from the villa.

In December 2021, the former Love Island star, 23, insisted she looks five years younger after getting her fillers dissolved.

She admitted she didn’t recognise herself by the time she reached the age of 21, having had a variety of cosmetic procedures done.

Influencer Molly-Mae has previously had her lip and jaw filler dissolved and her composite bonding veneers removed, saying she’s ‘terrified of myself’ when she looks at past pictures.

She said on The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett podcast: ‘I wouldn’t say I got addicted to it, but by the age of 21, I didn’t look like the same person.

‘I literally looked like a different person. When I look back at pictures now, I’m terrified of myself. I’m like, “Who was that girl?” I don’t know what happened.

‘But there was this one pivotal moment where I’d gone and got loads of filler and I posted a YouTube video and I hadn’t let the filler settle and it was really swollen and a screenshot from that video, it trended on Twitter for weeks.

‘It was horrendous. It was utterly horrendous. My face was literally like, it was just awful. That was the moment for me as well where I was like, I think things need to change.

‘I thought, one day I’m going to get my lips dissolved. It was a process. I went and got my lips dissolved and I posted about it on YouTube and I didn’t expect the response that I got. It was huge.’

The television personality said she feels more comfortable in her own skin than she ever has done before, confessing she took her fillers to the ‘extreme’.

She explained: ‘The minute I started to reverse my image and dissolve the filler and dissolve my lips – I actually had a full set of composite bonding on my teeth, I had them removed as well.

‘I literally took it to the extreme and I just stripped myself back and weirdly, I felt the prettiest I’d ever felt, once it had all gone. I feel like I’d dropped about five years off my age and it was like, it was a really, really significant moment for me.

‘I didn’t realise how much respect that would get me. I didn’t do it for respect, I did it for myself. I didn’t do it for anyone else, I did it because I knew that I needed to.’

She previously took to her Instagram Stories to showcase her transformation as she shared a photo of herself taken at London’s Winter Wonderland in 2019.

She followed it up with a photo taken at the festive event in 2021 after she had her fillers dissolved.

‘Tap to age me two years…’ she wrote alongside the first photo where she wrapped up in a brown woolly jacket while enjoying a box of Churros.

In the second snap, Molly-Mae had more dramatically arched eyebrows while she wore the same jacket along with a white turtle neck top and dark grey jeans.

The influencer has documented her decision to adopt a more natural look, sharing videos explaining the move.

She said: ‘I feel like I’m still definitely going through the process of trying to make everything as natural as I possibly can.

Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury met on series 5 of Love Island in 2019, finishing in second place

‘I made that many mistakes when I was younger I’m genuinely still trying to correct them now. That’s how far I took it a few years back – it’s not just a few appointments to correct that level of mistakes I made.’

The social media star also revealed that she only ‘randomly’ had her fillers dissolved, because she had originally only planned to have laser hair removal.

She said that on top of the hair removal procedure, she had ‘also booked in for a consultation to talk about getting the rest of the filler I feel is still in my face dissolved, and after I decided to just go ahead and get it done today’.

Molly-Mae also previously admitted she regrets getting filler at the tender age of 18, joking it left her looking like she had ‘jowls’.

In another YouTube video, Molly-Mae said: ‘I’m so scared for the children that are growing up now. At the age of 18, I felt that I needed to do that. For kids growing up now, they’re going to think it’s the norm.’

In December, Molly-Mae hit back at fans who asked if she has been getting lip filler while pregnant.

The former Love Island star, who has been open about having filler in the past, strongly denied she’d had any while pregnant.

Answering the question in a YouTube vlog, she said: ‘What kind of a mother do you think I am?’

Elaborating, she added: ‘I’ve been having so many questions recently about my lips. People asking whether I’ve been having lip filler again, which has really been making me laugh.

‘Guys do you really think while being pregnant I would get lip filler? Like, what kind of a mother do you think I am?’

Molly and her boyfriend Tommy announced in September that they are expecting their first child together.

JAMIE JEWITT

Jamie Jewitt recently showed off his two stone weight loss after admitting he gained weight after leaving the Love Island villa and becoming a father.

The 32-year-old model defied the odds and found love on the ITV2 show with co-star Camilla Thurlow.

The couple are now married and welcomed their daughter, Nell in 2020, and a daughter called Nora Belle Jewitt in May.

But Jamie admitted that in the years since he starred on the 2017 series, he ditched his healthy lifestyle and his weight crept up by five stone.

The challenges of leaving the villa six years ago and becoming a family man saw Jamie become five stone heavier.

The reality star became inspired to lose the added weight to be a better parent to his children.

Jamie admitted: ‘Honestly my life changed most when I became a parent as I stopped putting myself and my health first.’

In February 2021, Jamie proposed to Camilla Thurlow with their baby daughter wearing a personalised baby grow which read: ‘Mummy, will you marry my Daddy?’

He continued: ‘I’ve always exercised so I have to admit it was mainly diet that I began struggling with, being a parent for the first time quick and easy foods are what I got used to choosing.

‘I also felt that after a crazy busy day I just wanted to treat myself and eat what I liked! This all ended up creating a habit of ignoring self-care and I slowly lost the discipline I once had when it came to food.

‘Its a slippery slope once the bad habits set in and a difficult cycle to break when you have so much else going on that you need to think about i.e an increasingly energetic little bambino!’

The reality star grew ‘concerned’ after he weighed in at 17st1lbs, a big increase from 12st8lbs when he first entered as the Love Island bombshell in 2017.

However, he insists he ‘had no issue with my body image at a heavier weight.’ Jamie has now managed to shrink his ‘dad bod’ down to an impressive 14st5lbs.

To be able to drop the extra pounds and tone up the reality star started on Muscle Food’s GOAL GETTERS Lean Machine plan.

‘I’m still heavier than when I came out of Love Island, but I feel much happier at this new weight,’ he said.  ‘I now have found that balance and I feel like the younger healthier me, and able to be a more active happy healthy parent!’

‘I feel younger, happier, healthier and more energetic. All things that will help me to be a better parent!’

SHAUGHNA PHILLIPS

In February 2022, Shaughna Phillips showed off the results of getting her lip filler dissolved as she shared a new snap to Instagram (pictured)

On having her lip filler dissolved, Shaughna claimed she wants to ‘practise what she preaches’ after encouraging her fans to ‘separate their happiness from their body image’.

The former Love Island contestant admitted she was ‘nervous’ for the procedure as she took to Instagram to address her followers while walking through London’s Marylebone in the video.

She began: ‘The real reason I’m sharing my lips dissolving journey is because I have been preaching about separating your happiness from your body image.

In her caption, she gushed: ‘I GOT MY LIPS DISSOLVED. My amazing @dermaplusaesthetics has been doing my lips 8 years now but it was time for a fresh start.. Pictured, the Love Island star in the summer of 2022

‘I’ve been putting this off for so long because I just can’t bear the thought of having lips anymore. It will be all done in two weeks, all fresh and new so I’m trying to practice what I preach.’

Within her montage, she took her oversized sunglasses off in order to record herself inside the facility having a patch test before her pout was injected as she squinted.

Following the appointment, she announced: ‘I am done. My lips are a little bit swollen because of the treatment, they’ll be gone in about six hours and then I’ll have no lips so I’m gonna enjoy this six hours.

‘You know, what you build it all up in your head but it really ain’t nothing is it? It’s bloody lips, life goes on. It really weren’t that bad.’

In her caption, she gushed: ‘I GOT MY LIPS DISSOLVED. My amazing @dermaplusaesthetics has been doing my lips 8 years now but it was time for a fresh start.

‘I had some lumps in my bottom lip and migration in my top lip, mainly from me still having lip filler while I had Invisalign. Yes my dentist told me not to, no I didn’t listen, yes I am a t**t.’

‘I was SO hesitant about having my lips dissolved because I honestly don’t remember what I even look like without them! But there’s more to life than what size your bloody lips are,’ she went on.

MEGAN BARTON-HANSON

Giving it up: Megan Barton Hanson, 27, recently revealed she is not looking to have any more surgery after having a breast reduction when she lost weight

The Love Island star (pictured) said that as a teenager she decided to have her ears pinned back after being cruelly bullied about her looks, but went onto tell her fans she’s since realised you ‘can’t please everyone’

Megan Barton-Hanson previously detailed her experience undergoing her first cosmetic procedure when she was just 17 – and said the ‘surgery didn’t help me love myself’ after revealing she had some procedures reversed.

The Love Island star said that as a teenager she decided to have her ears pinned back after being cruelly bullied about her looks, but went onto tell her fans she’s since realised you ‘can’t please everyone.’

Megan urged her fans to think hard about whether they are having surgery for the right reasons, adding it ‘didn’t help her to love herself.’

Speaking to The Sun in June 2021, Megan explained she first had her ears pinned back when she was 17 years old in the hope it would boost her confidence and help her to overcome her insecurities.

But in reality, the star said it led her to have more procedures, including lip fillers, rhinoplasty and a breast enlargement.

She said: ‘The surgery helped me diminish the obsessive nature of my insecurities, but while it made me feel happier when looking in the mirror, that’s just surface level.

The reality star (pictured) urged her fans to think long and hard about undergoing any surgical procedures, insisting it won’t be a quick fix for anyone struggling with insecurities

‘It didn’t help me to love myself, that came from growing up and having a strong circle of empowered women around me.’

Megan went onto admit that she decided to have her lip fillers dissolved and the clips in her ears removed, and has since embraced her appearance.

The reality star urged her fans to think long and hard about undergoing any surgical procedures, insisting it won’t be a quick fix for anyone struggling with insecurities.

She added: ‘Surgery is not something that can make you love yourself. You can’t please everyone, so it must be done for you and you only.’

Last year Megan herself revealed she’d given up having plastic surgery after having her lip fillers dissolved.

She told MailOnline: ‘To be honest, all I get these days is Botox – I haven’t had my lips done since a year before the villa.

‘Where I got it all done at a young age, it’s easily maintained, filler lasts longer, I just have preventative Botox here and there but other than that I don’t really get anything else done. I am really happy with the way I look.’

Megan believes former Islanders, who are now reversing the work they’ve had done, made rushed decisions after finding fame on the show – and now regret it.

In 2019, Megan also spoke of her plastic surgery during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, urging her young fans to seek therapy rather than opt for drastic cosmetic measures to improve their looks.

The Love Island star told hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard she thought getting ‘bigger boobs and a smaller nose’ at the age of 19 would make her feel more content, but she now realises true confidence comes from within.

In January 2022, she revealed she is not looking to have any more cosmetic surgery after having a breast reduction when she lost weight.

The former Love Island star wrote for Grazia that she started putting herself first after she broke things off with her girlfriend in 2020.

She penned: ‘I restarted therapy and can confidently say I’m in the best, most content place I’ve ever been – mentally and physically. Because of this, my old, bigger breast implants no longer sat right on my chest, so I decided to go for a different style and shape.’

Aside from Botox, she has sworn off surgery and said that as she gets older she finds it easier to block out negativity.

DR ALEX GEORGE

In April 2022, Dr Alex George shared a shirtless selfie to Instagram as he attempted to ‘redefine what it means to be beautiful’ by urging people to look at character, physical ability and ‘things that make us unique.’

In April 2022, Dr Alex George shared a shirtless selfie to Instagram as he attempted to ‘redefine what it means to be beautiful’ by urging people to look at character, physical ability and ‘things that make us unique.’

The Love Island star, 31, admitted how easy it is to ‘get caught up into comparing yourself to others’ and trying to alter your appearance in order to attain social media standards of aesthetic perfection.

Dr Alex penned alongside his snap: ‘We are so much more than the skin we are in, but I think we should ALL start to appreciate it and ourselves a lot more.

‘Social media is often a place quick to praise and celebrate “beautiful” people, which got me thinking – what actually does it mean to be beautiful?

‘It’s so easy to get caught up into comparing yourself to others, trying to change and alter the way we look in order to to fit a certain image and become [an] ideal version of ourselves.

‘Being beautiful should NOT be defined by the way one looks, but rather how someone is – friendly, loving, optimistic, generous, kind-hearted.

‘The things that make us unique, our freckles, our hair, our skin our tattoos, our stretch marks and scars. Beautiful is also what our body is able to do and allow us to do, through movement.

‘Let’s redefine what it means to be beautiful. I hope you will join me and start celebrating the things that make you, you! Stick a [blue heart] below if you agree x’

In March 2022, Dr Alex continued to spread the message of body positivity and mental wellbeing as he took to Instagram to share a shirtless snap after hitting the gym.

The former Love Island star beamed for the camera and promised he would be less critical of his body, stating: ‘I love all it’s imperfections [sic]’.

Dr Alex, who featured in the 2018 series of Love Island, revealed last year that he ‘felt embarrassed’ to exercise after losing the six pack he displayed on the ITV show.

Posing in the mirror for a shirtless selfie he flexed his arm as he smiled in the gym changing rooms.

Alongside the candid snap he wrote: ‘Over the years I have been super self critical of my body but not anymore.

‘From now on I am going to be grateful of my body and what it allows me to do. Repeat after me, I LOVE my body and ALL of it’s perfect imperfections.’

The front line medic found fame on Love Island. He was then appointed as the Youth Mental Health Ambassador within the Department for Education, after his work to prioritise mental health.

FAYE WINTER

Faye Winter has gone for a more natural look these days after reducing her lip fillers. She showcased her new appearance in August 2022, when appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (pictured)

In December 2021, she explained that she had added a small amount of filler back into her ‘thin lips’ weeks after dissolving her oversize pout following concerns the procedure made her ‘nose and teeth look bigger.’

Faye Winter was known for her famously plumped lips while taking part in the 2021 series of Love Island, where she reached the final with boyfriend Teddy Soares.

In December 2021, she explained that she had added a small amount of filler back into her ‘thin lips’ weeks after dissolving her oversize pout following concerns the procedure made her ‘nose and teeth look bigger.’

The Love Island star admitted it was a ‘shock to the system’ having 4ml of filler removed from her lips after she ‘forgot how small they were’ at their normal size.

In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, Faye revealed she couldn’t bare the look of her natural lips, which she compared to an ‘envelope’ and said she only showed them on Instagram stories with a filter that enhanced their appearance.

Faye (pictured recently), who’s also had two boob jobs, says now her lips are plump again, she has no reason to have any more cosmetic surgery

She said: ‘I have built my lips up over time, so I did forget how small they were. To have them completely dissolved, it was a shock to the system.

‘I do pride myself in my appearance and unfortunately I felt like when I had my small lips, my nose looked bigger, my teeth looked bigger, I have big teeth naturally and these are all my own teeth – it’s the one thing about me that is real believe it or not.

‘It takes a lot of getting used to, but I wasn’t going to get used to it. I had 4ml in my lips when I went into Love Island. I have only got 1 ½ now and that’s all I’m going to have.

‘A lot of people said they wanted me to keep them natural but believe me, you don’t.

‘Even when I put them on my Instagram story, once, with the thin lips, with a filter on that made my lips look bigger, believe me when I say I looked like an envelope.’

Faye, who’s also had two boob jobs, says now her lips are plump again, she has no reason to have any more cosmetic surgery.

She added: ‘I have my lips done, I have Botox in my forehead, and I’ve had my boobs done. I’m not going to get my boobs done again when I’m a bit older to go smaller, I don’t have a bum but I’m happy with no bum – I don’t want jaw filler, I don’t want cheek filler, I don’t want my nose done or my ears pinned back, I’m happy.’

ROSIE WILLIAMS

Since leaving the villa, she’s sported a more natural look, largely ditching the standout glamorous makeup she was also known for.

In June 2022, she revealed the results of her secret hair transplant online after undergoing the procedure in 2020.

The Love Island star, 30, told fans she made the decision after she didn’t ‘recognise’ herself anymore due to ‘chunks of hair’ falling out.

She said has suffered with hair thinning and bald patches due to ‘years of personal stress’ which has had a major impact on her mental health.

She explained: ‘Unfortunately, over the last couple of years my overall hair health has continued to deteriorate. I can only put it down to the amount of stress I’ve been under for personal reasons.

Before and after: In June 2022, she revealed the results of her secret hair transplant online after undergoing the procedure in 2020

‘My hair has continued to thin and I’m experiencing bald patches, the overall hairline has completely changed shape and I don’t even recognise myself anymore.

‘What upsets me the most is that every time I wash my hair, I end up sitting on the floor in tears with chunks of wet hair in my hands that have come out of my scalp and I have no idea why.’

The former solicitor rose to fame on the 2018 series of Love Island, where she was coupled up with Adam Collard before being dumped.

She said: ‘Hair loss isn’t something I would wish on anybody, It’s completely impacted my overall happiness and confidence – and following Love Island I was blessed enough to have a lovely following on Instagram that I no longer wish to share myself with because I’m so embarrassed of my hair.’

Rosie decided to visit celebrity hair transplant surgeon and surgical director Dr Matee Rajput at the KSL Clinic in Manchester.

The process saw Rosie having her new hairline mapped out before embarking on the 22-month long journey.

She went on to say: ‘The decision to go ahead and have this surgery is not a decision I made lightly. I’ve done extensive research into hair loss, how to get your hair to grow again, hair transplants in general.

‘I’ve spoken to friends and family, but it wasn’t until I had a consultation with Dr Matee at KSL Clinic and I actually sought expert advice that I realised a hair transplant was an option for me.’

AJ BUNKER

AJ Bunker entered the Love Island villa in 2021 as a bombshell before being dumped.

She got her cheek filler dissolved back in September 2021 after professional Dr Ahmed El Muntasar told her the £1,000 filler she had done prior to going on the ITV2 show was injected incorrectly.

She told The Sun: ‘It’s so refreshing having someone being honest with you and not just taking your money, but actually saying “no this doesn’t look good, this isn’t a good area to get it” or “you don’t even need it at all”.

‘As soon as he dissolved my filler, I looked so much more natural and instantly felt like me again. I haven’t got any cheek filler now and he’s recommended I get my lips dissolved at some point too.’

AJ previously revealed that she spent £1,000 getting filler four times in a month ahead of her stint on the ITV dating show.

The reality star also admitted that she understands why she was branded ‘granny’ by trolls online, and even confessed that she agrees with some of their comments, insisting: ‘I didn’t look like my normal self!’

AJ – full name Andrea-Jane – told The Sun that she spent more than £1,000 on fillers, forking out out £250 a go for 0.5ml cheek and 1ml lip injections, and said: ‘I didn’t realise it was making my face look worse.’

She explained: ‘When I found out I was going into the Villa, I panicked. I decided to get cheek filler last minute and once I had it done, I just kept going back. I thought “I need more, I need more”.

‘I was hoping it would make me look younger, because I had this line under my eye which I thought looked like a big wrinkle or an eye bag; I didn’t want to look tired. I spent all this money but it did the opposite.’

The Love Islander admitted that when she watched herself back on television she realised that she ‘looked like a hamster.’
