Co-op stores in central England are to extend their free home delivery service beyond lockdown. The service was originally set in place to help people navigate lockdown restrictions.

Central England Co-op launched a free home delivery service last year as part of an effort to offer support to communities during lockdown.

The service was expected to end this summer, but Co-op has decided to extend it until the end of the year.

The company said it wanted to continue supporting customers beyond the furlough scheme and until vaccination numbers increased.

Co-op shoppers can get their food delivered for free in central England via two apps.

All customers need to do is order their groceries via either Snappy Shopper or Appy Shop, and their shopping will be delivered straight to their door.

Snappy Shopper is available for customers living in Derby, Lichfield, and Birmingham, and allows shoppers to order their groceries and have them delivered to their door within an hour.

Fifty central England stores in total are offering a free delivery service via Snappy Shopper.

Appy Shop is running in parts of Suffolk, Leicester, Stafford, and Burton, and allows customers to choose a time slot for their shopping to be dropped off.

Shoppers can also order Co-op groceries online on the company’s website or via the Deliveroo app.

However, a delivery charge may be issued if using these services.

Speaking about the extension of the service, Paul Dennis, Central England Co-op’s Chief Retail Officer, said: “We expect that members in our community will still feel nervous beyond June when the restrictions are expected to be lifted and as such the delivery service will continue to be a necessity.

“In addition, the expected wind-up of the furlough scheme in September, which will likely leave families facing financial challenges.”

Mr Dennis added: “With these factors in mind, the continuation of free delivery for members was an obvious choice.

“Never have the values of Central England Co-op been more pertinent – putting community above profits.”

To be applicable for the offer, customers must be members of the Co-op and must spend a minimum of £15 on their shopping.

Membership costs £1 and allows shoppers to collect rewards and discounts every week.

Some shoppers have shared their experience of the free home delivery service.

Cathy, 65, starting using the service in December. She said: “Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been leaving the house as little as possible as my husband is vulnerable and shielding from the virus.

“I would go out once a week at the shop’s quietest time – in the evening – gloved and masked, as protected as possible. I would hurtle back and put everything in the wash, hoping I hadn’t brought anything back.

“It was a godsend when I became aware of the delivery service.”
