Greggs urges customers to stay two metres apart

Greggs has announced that it will be opening new stores in the next few months in its half-year results, which saw the bakery chain’s sales return to pre-pandemic levels. The news comes after the popular chain had reported profits of £55.5 million for six months to July 3, compared with a £65.2 million loss a year earlier. Where will the new Greggs open?
Although reporting a huge profit, the chain has said it saw mixed performance from its stores.
It said its shops in public transport hubs and large city centres performed weaker due to a huge number of Britons still working from home.
Greggs said that “customers staying closer to home are supporting our heartland shops in suburban and high street areas”.
It added the “stronger locations continue to be shops typically accessed by car”.
This includes those positioned at service stations and standalone Greggs stores.
The chain has said it is looking at even more ambitious plans as it said it had “the opportunity to expand its UK estate to at least 3,000 shops”.
As of the start of July 2021, the company had 2,115 locations across the country.
Greggs has not shared the full list of new branch locations but has said new stores will open in Canary Wharf, London, Eastcheap, London and Slough Westage.

The bakery chain will also open stores in MFG Stratford, Esso MFG Walker and Bognor Regis Saltbox.
The group has also boosted its delivery and drive-thru services, which is becoming increasingly popular amongst customers.
Home delivery is now available from 837 branches and is available on apps such as Just Eat.
Roger Whiteside, chief executive of Greggs, said: “Greggs once again showed its resilience in a challenging first half, emerging from the lockdown months in a strong position and rebuilding sales as social restrictions were progressively relaxed.
“Whilst there continue to be general uncertainties in the market, given our recent performance we now expect full-year profit to be slightly ahead of our previous expectation.”
In March, the chain confirmed it had permanently closed 56 of its stores as it reported its first loss in 36 years due to the pandemic.
Taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the news, customers were excited to find out the locations.
One person said: “Greggs are on a roll, can’t wait.”
Another wrote: “I wonder where they will be located, I see a Greggs on every high street already these days.”
“Some good news at once,” a third commented.
Following its success with its vegan sausage roll, Greggs recently unveiled its newest vegan food item, which launches on August 5.
The Vegan Sauce, Bean and Cheese Melt consists of pieces of vegan sausage, beans, and two types of vegan cheese inside a golden puff pastry pocket.
Costing £1.60, it is the plant-based version of the company’s iconic Sausage, Bean and Cheese Melt, which has been popular for years.
