A commendably diverse Oscar nominations gave us plenty of landmark firsts

It’ll be a cracking night in Ireland come March 12, thanks to the plentiful Oscar nominations showered on Irish talent this year.

Black comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin features in just about every major category, including best picture and four acting nods, while Ireland’s Paul Mescal has his first nomination, for the UK indie fave Aftersun.

Many Brits hoped Aftersun’s Scottish auteur, Charlotte Wells, might sneak into best director.

But after females won that category in two successive years (Jane Campion in 2021, Chloé Zhao in 2022), it proved all quiet on the best director front for women.

In an all-male line-up, Steven Spielberg cemented his record as the only person nominated for best director across six different decades, for The Fabelmans.

Any landmark firsts? Several in this commendably diverse line-up.

Angela Bassett made history as the first actor to be nominated for a Marvel movie while Malaysian star Michelle Yeoh became the first best actress nominee to identify as Asian for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once – which leads the race to the trophy cabinet with 11 nominations.

Best actress is fiercely fought this year, with stunning African-American contenders Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till) both edged out.

Instead, their slot went to chameleonic Brit Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie, a tiny movie that almost no one saw (it made $27,000 [£22,000] at the box office) until a successful, no-budget, viral celebrity campaign led by Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Aniston et al.

Money may always talk in Hollywood, but in 2023 celebrity influencing is now a serious new currency.
