Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite defiantly urged those who criticised others’ appearance to focus on themselves instead as “it’ll make you a better person”. The 32-year-old is a regular gym user and has said his morning workouts help him with his energy on the dance floor.
Behind-the-scenes however, John’s love of lifting weights began from a personal health issue.
The Great British Bake Off winner said it was suffering from bulimia and body dysmorphia in his childhood that made him turn to workouts.
He said: “I don’t work out so I can post pictures of myself on Instagram. I don’t work out because I feel having muscular body shape makes me a better person.
“I work out because I am bulimic and because I have struggled with body dysmorphia since I was a little boy. Going to the gym is my way of keeping things under control.
“It allows me to feel like I have a small grip on the rudder of my life.”
The Strictly star added that his workouts also let him “zone out” away from busy life.
“If you’re going to post platitudinal screenshots about being kind and caring, please put that into practice.
“You don’t know what any single one of us is going through,” he added in an Instagram post.
The chef shared the message alongside a picture of him proudly showcasing his muscles in a shoot for Attitude Magazine.
Many of his 225,000 followers flocked to his post to comment.
Strictly pro Nancy Xu commented with a series of love heart emojis.
