Line of Duty returned with its much-anticipated sixth series on BBC One last night. The show featured plenty more of its typical abbreviations in the premiere, including a new one called CHIS. However, Pointless co-host Richard Osman, 50, thinks he has cracked a secret meaning behind this.

In the opening episode, many viewers were left scratching their head about the meaning of CHIS.

The abbreviation was used when AC-12 returned to screens on Sunday evening.

Following the episode airing, the BBC announcer confirmed it stood for Covert Human Intelligence Source.

However, Richard thinks this could have a bigger meaning in a new outlandish theory.

The quizmaster wrote about this to his one million followers after the episode ended.

He tweeted: “So they’re telling us CHIS stands for ‘Covert Human Intelligence Source’.

“But what if CHIS really stands for ‘Clearly H Is Steve’? Makes you think #LineOfDuty”

As fans will know, one of the biggest mysteries going into the sixth series is the identity of H.

The storyline began when Matthew ‘Dot’ Cottan (Craig Parkinson) died back in series three.

He seemed to implicate a colleague known as ‘H’ after he blinked when DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) reached that letter of the alphabet.

Since then, the team has slowly been cracking the code, with DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) explaining it was Morse code, meaning there are four corrupt officers in the police force.

So far, three have been identified as ACC Derek Hilton (Paul Higgins), Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) and Cottan.

However, this means there is still one to be discovered, which Richard thinks could be Steve after all.

The Pointless presenter’s followers loved the theory with many of them responding to his tweet.

One wrote: “Oh god you’ve blown this wide open, fella.”

A second continued: “The painkillers, wanting to leave AC-12… Good god man, you could be right!”

“My head has just fallen off…”, another added.

A fourth waded in on the best-selling author’s remark: “You should write murder mysteries and that sort of thing. No. Really. You should….”

While another viewer wasn’t so thrilled with the idea of more theories.

They replied: “Oh, don’t. I’ve spent an hour shouting, ‘it’s him/her/them!!! Don’t look in the freezer!!. Phew, it’s gone.’

“All I need is any outside random suggestions, mixing the pot.”

Line of Duty airs on BBC One at 9pm on Sundays.
